Default I bought....

Well i broke down and went and purchased a "Wench" made by Primos. I took it out of the package and made the "uuuuuuuut uuut uuut uuut uut ut" sound.... sounded like a dying duck.... Do these things come pre-tuned ?? I made myself sick by trying it different ways... Different ways of holding my lips against it... i even tried to hold it differently to see if it made a difference... Its got a hole almost to the end of it and i was reading the instructions that if you cover the hole, it was a lower pitch sound and if you leave it un-covered, its higher pitched... Im not understanding this crap...

A real ducks quack sounds sick, I never used Primo's. Only Faulks, Olt and Haydel calls.

Most calls will gettem in close enough to shoot. Like Ray said, real ducks sound like ****zel. Some mallard hens are raspy, some squeek, some sound like they have a bad cold and congested. high pitch /low pitch. Big thing is Practice,
Practice, Practice. Every year a few weeks before season, I break out the calls and practice one my way to and from work. Thats about 45 min each way. When you call and the birds turn and are heading your way DON'T CALL! once past the deks and flying away to start the circle a couple of quacks but not together maybe five sec apart will usually seal the deal on the river if they are looking to stop. Sometimes you have to take em on a fly by. Not sure on a marsh, haven't been on a marsh hunt since I was about 20. That was 30 years ago........ just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

Best thing to do is sit in front of a house that has tame mallards in the back yard
and see if you can make them call back to your call.
Every duck sounds different. Don't get hung up on the sound of your call. It will work
if you don't over do it.
When ducks are far away, call louder. When close, don't call loud, barely do any
when they are in the pond.
Also, learn to use a whistle. Ducks work well to a whistle too. Most all ducks whistle.
If you are hunting with someone else, while one is quacking one can whistle.
Or alone, rotate between the two.

nothing wrong with a good whistle man. i got a few in my blind every hunt! get good with a whistle first cause if u happen to be alone u wanna be able to at least attract ducks. then when u hunting with someone who can call well, just watch what he does, and when no ducks are flying try it out a few times and see if u can get some pointers. thats how i learned. always gotta start out as a "whistle man"
