Requesting help

My Story,

I grew up on the water. I remember waking my dad up to go fishing at a young age. Now I have 3 young kids and have been trying to get them to share the same enthusiasm as me for a while now with not much success. Trying to get them out of the house and off the video games. Recently they have been showing more interest and I am trying to exploit it. Because my wife is not working, pursuing her RN degree, money has been extremely tight. I have a kayak and fish from that when I don't have the kids. I enjoy the Lake Charles area, but come from Lafayette. Recently me and the kids have made a few trips with the only success being from Holly beach. Normally only able to catch one or two bull reds. This Saturday I am taking just my oldest and would like to put him on a few slot reds but don't know where to start looking from them. we are limited to fishing from the bank. Any pointers on where I could try would be appreciated. I get gun shy sometime because I don't want to end up on private property. Not looking for someone's honey hole. just want to grow the interest of the kids.

Thanks in advance.

Try the weir at the launch on 27 at west cove. Should be some fish moving there after that front. Also I'll post a pic in a few minutes of a spot in hackberry.

Thanks, I launch the kayak out of west cove, but normally don't make it there before the heard of crabbers when I have the kids, so I have not stopped. don't want to get in the way. will have to stop and try.

Take a look at this map. Both places are right on the channel. You'll catch reds specks and flounder at the 2 places marked in red. The top marker, just drive to the end of the road and park. Walk across the ditch and fish. Bottom marker is a boat launch. You'll park and make a short walk to the channel. I know people who do well at both places. When I'm out in my boat, I'll fish these areas also.

Man I greatly appreciate it. spots like this is just what I was looking for. not in the way of any crabbers and don't have to deal with the beach. will allow me to get him working some plastic baits. we will give it a try. Thanks.

I have had good luck fishing the bank of the Mermentau on the west side in Grand Chenier right north of the bridge. Falling tide works the best.

Thanks, I think I want him to work on his technique and landing before I put him in the kayak or canoe. I greatly appreciate it.

normally after we leave holly beach we cross the Cameron ferry and take the back roads home stopping at Rockefeller. I always look at that spot and wonder when passing. will give it a try.
Thanks,

I used to take my kids (when they were younger) to Rockefeller at Joseph's harbor. Fishing from the bank at the East End Locks into the main channel at the edge of the parking lot has always produced this time of year. Try to catch some shrimp, pogies or finger mullet with a cast net and rig that under a cork; the kids will be able to see the cork go down and that will keep them busy having fun. If you don't have a cast net to catch bait, ask one of the cast netters if you can have some of their by-catch to fish with. Usually they will be accommodating. Also, it's closer than Holly Beach or Hog Island Gully. Good Luck!
