Headed down to Rockefeller Refuge near Pecan Island yesterday to scare up a few reds with some good friends. Troy, Seeing Spots and I bundled up and even bought some market shrimp for bait. I usually live or die with artificials but I wanted some insurance this time. Troy only comes in from Memphis once a year, so I wanted to make sure that we caught some fish.
We got there at about 8:00. Tide was so low that we could not get into any canals. The entrances to all of them were just mud flats. Around 10:00 the tide had risen enough to get us in. Hit several of the usual spots and came up with only one small keeper red. Around noon we finally found the spot and started off with a triple hook up. We sat there for about 3 hours catching steadily with many throw-backs. Thankfully we had bought the bait shrimp. We tried artificial lures for a while after hearing of two good artificial reports from Sunday, but we caught zero until we put a dead shrimp on a jig head and let it sit motionless on the bottom. Ended up with right at a 3 man limit with probably twice as many undersized reds and many drum. In a second boat, Karl brought Justin redfishing for his tenth birthday. Justin caught the big fish of the day as seen in the attached picture. |
