Starting Friday I fished four days straight counting today. Conditions have been near perfect with the winds laying down and temperatures up. Under these circumstances the fishing was hot, but not as hot as it should have been. Friday we worked hard for 25 trout with and a red. Some folks out there did better but the bite was really spot oriented. Thanks to Capt. Marty Lacoste for setting up the trip. Saturday was a bit more of the same, but the bite got better as the weekend progressed. Additionally, the bite was really soft and there were a lot of short strikes. We probably caught around 35 trout and missed about the same. At one point, my customer asked me to fish with his rod and reel to see if I could feel the bites because he couldn't. That's when you know the trout are being slippery! Sunday I had a crew from Canada on their first trip to Louisiana. We hit the honey hole earlier than daylight and it paid off. We were catching every cast until a rude boater motored through the fishing hole and 50 feet from my boat. When you're fishing a really narrow bayou and you see people catching fish, I recommend shutting down the engine and trolling past. Anyway, we left that spot and went elsewhere and ended up finishing up our limit of 75 trout. The bite peaked on Sunday. Thanks to Capt. Tommy Pellegrin for setting up that trip. Today I had high hopes for a repeat of Sunday, and first thing this morning it started shaping up to be that way. Right off the bat, we caught 10 quick then the bite died in a matter of minutes. There was another spot holding fish that I just knew would be hot, but that didn't pan out either. I abandoned trout fishing and took a gamble on some reds that I haven't fished since last fall. With the water level being so low today, I was right and struck gold. We hooked 14 reds and landed 11 in short order. With those and 23 trout in the box, we jumped back over to where the trout were and found a hot bite. Picked up another 17 trout for a total of 40 on the day. Thanks to Capt. Travis for setting up this trip. Fishing will get better and better as long as the weather holds up. We should start to see some shrimp moving into the lakes soon. I have a feeling the trout bite will explode when that happens! Give me a call to get on a trip! Capt. Rob 225-776-9820
