Default Rainy Day Redfish 4/24 Lake Charles

I decided to make a last minute trip in the kayak before the rains came. I got to the launch and it started pouring! I was about to just go home and find something else to do, but I pulled up the radar on my phone and it looked clear, so I waited a few minutes and the rain subsided.

Got in the water and 5 minutes later it was on! Missed a nice slot redfish trying to get him in the net...the kayak has been sitting for a few months and I'm more than a little rusty! No problem, hooked another on the very next cast, and released the 16" fish to fight another day.

The water was so high in the marsh that it was tough to sight fish, but there was plenty of bait present, so casting to the usual spots proved fruitful.

I ended up keeping 2 fish for dinner. After a text from my wife confirming the fam had already eaten (daddy stayed a little later than planned lol), I gave away the 18" fish to a guy fishing the bank and kept a 23" for myself.

All fish were caught on spinnerbaits. Couldn't buy a topwater fish. Despite the fact that this should be a freshwater report according to salinity levels, there were redfish blowing up all over the marsh. The water was high and heavily stained, but wasn't muddied up. I could see my paddle 8" down or so.

It was nice to get back on the water for a couple hours!

Nice! Sometimes you gotta just go. Where's there to launch with a kayak around LC?

There's a launch at the base of the I-10 bridge. Sometimes I'll launch directly onto North Beach.

The only actual public kayak launch I know of in the Lake Charles/Prien area is Prien Lake Park.

Good report, thanks for sharing. My kayak fishing is rusty too.
There is a kayak launch in Henderson bayou, west side of Prien park and there is also one on the north side of LaFleur park (210) if they ever reopen that park after all the Golden Nugget road work is complete.

There is also a Yack launch at the New Moss Bluff boat lunch, if you are looking to fish fresh water.
