Default Good End to a Solid Week

Despite the wind blowing 900mph most of last week we were still able to catch plenty of fish each and every day. Wednesday was the only day we didn’t kill the fish and that’s because Aaron and I spent the entire time riding around looking for fish for the Galveston Redfish Series on Saturday. We were off the water by about 10:00 after ruling out every place we looked at. Fred drove in from Houston Thursday morning after I failed to talk him out of going fishing due to the wind and we are both glad that he was stubborn about going! We caught redfish on TTF’s new GunDog Flush topwater until we were sick of ‘em with some solid trout to 4lbs mixed in as well. We rode around in a little bit of the marsh at the end of the day but didn’t see much going on, most of the water was pretty churned up and we didn’t see much bait activity either.

Friday we were back on Calcasieu in what seemed like the windiest day yet this year but we still had a decent box of fish with 12 flounder, 10 trout, and just one redfish. I still don’t know if we ever felt the first bite because of the wind… We threw bug juice Killer Flats Minnows rigged on an 1/8oz jighead along with pearl Gulp swim mullets to catch our fish on a windward shoreline in about 2-2.5′ of water.

Aaron and I fished the Galveston Redfish Series preseason opener on Saturday and of course the wind was a ***** again.. I caught a 4lb trout on my first cast and thought for sure that I just jinxed the heck out of us especially when we didn’t get another bite for the next half hour. Aaron stuck a solid redfish and it was on like Donkey Kong after that. We nearly had our arms pulled off over the next few hours until we headed to the ramp around noon to make the drive to the weigh-in. We brought two 27.5″ reds to the scales that weighed in at 16.95lbs which ended up being the winning stringer. Our strategy was quite a bit different than most that I talked to. We spent our time in the ship channel bounching 4″ Gulp shrimp and bug juice Killer Flats Minnows on a 1/2oz jighead off the bottom in 14′ of water.

It's been good, GREAT when the wind is below 40mph!! I need to get some of those jigheads, I am just about all out of the 1/8oz. I meant to call Josh today but I was on the radio for a few hours this morning then hit Sabine.

I won't be making it, guiding all that weekend. Not sure if Aaron is gonna fish it or not. The GRS on the 11th is next for us. Should be a good turn out for the XRT though
