As in most years, as we approach Thanksgiving, I try and study the Pilgrims a bit to help provide my children and myself with perspective. Modern Americans are often too quick to see ourselves as heroes without fully appreciating the immense sacrifices and personal challenge.

Much like the Pilgrims, the MathGeek family chooses not to celebrate Christmas. Our reasons are much the same: seeing no Biblical mandate for the event, we prefer to look at every day the same. Don't misunderstand me, I am a man of faith who (as the Pilgrims) believes that Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, bore my sins on the cross, and was raised from the dead. My wife and I simply choose not to celebrate the birth of our Lord on 25 December.

However, as I hope I would not harden my heart toward kindness to those in need on any other day, why would I harden my heart on 25 December? I'll work out the amount with my family and get Corey the money within the next week. I am grateful to Corey and the other SC members for putting this together. Compared with their heartfelt efforts, writing a check is the easy part.

Please pray about a gift and talk to your families. If MathGeek Scrooge can give to the 2013 Christmas Drive, you probably can too.
