Yes, taking US 190 is 10 miles [just guessing] closer. But I think staying on I-10 to Lafayette and then going north on I-49 would be just about the same driving time and an easier drive.

Interstate traffic can be very slow going through BR, so avoid 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM times, and hope there is not a wreck.

Also.....FYI, I drove from BR to Lake Charles [7:30 to 9:30 PM] this evening. I saw Sherriff cars in 6 different places between the Atchafalaya basin bridge and Lake Charles, all watching the traffic.

That's the way my gps routed it...thru Laffy...and that's the way my wife suggests we go. But, she ain't drivin'. This means I gotta go across that slow, long-azz bridge.

Last time I went to Big Lake, it took about 3 1/2 hours to get to Laffy. That would make the trip 4 1/2 hours or so going that way. Gotta be farther than 10 miles difference?
