I fish with the Penn 4400ss. I have two and I recently bought two Penn Captiva cv2 2000. The newer Penns are okay, but they don't have a reverse/antireverse switch, but that's minor. I still prefer my 4400's though. Not saying they are the best, but I have had my two 4400ss for almost 15 years. They are looking a little rough around the edges, but they still work reliably and I trust them. Nothing against Shimano reels, but I'm partial to my Penns. Oh and I shoot a Wingmaster too, lol.
No advice on the rods. Personally I find it hard to pay $100 or more for rods, but to each his own. Heard good things about the Shimano rods and their lifetime warranty. My next rods will probably be them, if they aren't too darn expensive. Have a buddy that swears by the G Loomis rods, but his pockets are a little deeper than mine.
