you would have to get with the permit office to see what the setbacks and riteways are on that property. you should have been given that info when you bought the property, if you still have that paperwork. then you have to deal with the building codes IRC 2009 book. the rule of thumb is 5' from lot line or any other structor on the property.if you do go closer than 5', then that wall must be constructed as a 1 hour fire wall protected from the outside. meaning from 3'-5' you must put fire rated sheetrock on the exterior under your finish material, and you are limited on doors and windows on that wall. if it falls from 0'-3' from the line you have to have a 1 hour fire wall and no openings in that wall. it also counts for projections (over hangs/ soffits). they too must be wrapped in sheetrock or an approved fire rated materials. as far as building codes the law is state wide since jan , 2007. good luck!! contact David Thibadaux with calc. parish. he's also on the stae board.
