Just putting this out there, not trying to argue but birdwatchers spend billions each year. You probably don't see them lined up during hunting season because the birds they are wanting to see are coming thru in September and then March/April. Its a pretty big deal right now down around Johnson Bayou and also on the other side of the state on Grand Isle. Birds migrating across the gulf finally get to the land and are so worn out that they literally fall down and tumble when they hit the ground. Birdwatchers come from all over to see stuff like this. There was a Migratory Bird Festival on Grand Isle last weekend actually, people from all over the country. Sabine, Lac, and Cameron Prairie are there for migratory birds, but mostly waterbirds and waterfowl. Fishing is just extra. Our NWRs are very much on the chopping block right now for funding, so they can't manage the extra things right now. Cameron Prairie needs to be burned every so often, Lacassine as well, but the funding isn't there to do it anymore. The good things never last
IF there was salvinia in Lacassine like someone said, then it was probably the best decision just to drain that sucker at the expense of the fish than to let that stuff take over. Its bad stuff, and unfortunately its here to stay. The herbicide is very expensive and you can only treat so much at a time without hurting the fish and the health of the waterway.
