Alligator gar along the beach in Grand Isle???
Call me crazy, but this past Saturday I was fishing the beach and noticed what appeared to be an alligator gar break the surface a couple of times... Has anyone else noticed this? I thought those guys liked to say in brackish and fresh water?

They can tolerate saltwater for periods of time. Strange, but not impossible that you would see one off the beach.

See them a lot surf fishing. Makes you a little jumpy when they surface a few feet in front of you.

my buddy and I saw one in PENSACOLA, beach side...... it was strugglinggggg(i imagine too much salt bc that water was crazy salty) but shows they venture out into saltier water than most would think. I've seen one while standing on the rocks in Cameron as well blowing up through bait.

Gar are mouthbreathers at times

They are all over the marshes in Grand Isle. Not rare to see in surf at all in that area.

I once had one attempt to take my trout away from me in the cove at v. bay! Not nearly as salty but was still pretty strange to see! It was a monster too!

always caught them seining (when it was legal) on the beaches south of grand chenier when growing up. There is no better tasting gar than one caught in salt water.
