Jig head discussion!
🎣🎣let's talk jig heads and fishing. 🐟
1. how do you choose what jig head to use when fishing. 2. Which size to use in what conditions. 3. Does jig head color really work. 4. Does matching line to jig head size really matter. 5. List the sizes from smallest jig head to largest for saltwater fishing.if there is something I missed please add. Thanks [emoji482] [emoji482] [emoji482] [emoji41] |
1/8 ir 1/4 yellowmouth jighead. I use the 1/8th to fish slower. I like chartreuse for the aesthetic reasons but have been using unpainted and havin no problems.

1/16-1/2 oz unpainted. I choose by water temp, depth, current strength, wind, and presentation type. I used to use painted, but I think it hurts sometimes
|
i use several kinds, sledheads, screw on and the ones with the little screw spring in the eye so you can rig weedless or oysterless and the weighted swim bait hooks. mainly 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 oz. some times we'll go to 3/8 and 1/2 oz at the jetty's if the tide is rippin.
just received a few of the Jig Nasty's and they are pretty good, just haven't got to test em much. |
I never once used a color jig head in my life and have zero problems catching fish so color does not matter one bit
Un painted is all u need |

Unpainted is all you need but a red one with a avacado color bait like green hornet isn't a bad idea.
Also a chart one with chart baits isn't terrible but it will not make or break. |
Unpainted is all I throw now. Mainly 1/8 and 1/4. I'll throw 3/8 like everybody else when the tide is ripping. If I'm double rigging I'll throw two 1/8's under the same conditions I would be throwing 1/4. Never in your life Waltrip? I think everybody has thrown those old flat red H&H jig heads with the spooky eye on em.

Yellow mouth jigheads. You'd be a certified MORON to use anything else.

only on the most finaky of days would a head color matter but then the same can be said for using a swivel on the end of your line.
many who never use a swivel because they swear it makes a difference will say head color doesn't make a difference when in truth they both will make a difference under the right conditions but overall in general since water clarity is the key to how much difference it makes, the area you fish and the water clarity you have there decides. |

Head color makes more of a difference say in Florida where the water is crystal clear. We don't have that problem in this state. I will use 1/16 to 3/8. 1/8 about 90% of the time. Unpainted about 95% of the time. May only use a painted head if it matches the theme of the plastic. And I am partial to the yellowmouthbaits jig heads, for certain reasons.
|
This time of year in still water i use the lightest head i can 1/16 and no heavier than 1/8 . Using small plastics. If there is tidal movement i use the smallest head that will plant the jig on bottom. unpainted always

Popping cork uses 1/16 or 1/8 depending on wind.
Water depth of 1-7 feet uses 1/8 or 1/4. Same applies if your working fast over deeper water. Water depth greater than that usually means 3/8 or 1/2 if they are on the bottom. I use painted jigheads to keep me organized. White for 1/16 and 1/8. Chartreuse for 1/4. Plain for everything else. Makes life easy when I'm rummaging in the box. |
I tried the yellowmouth and like em. when throwing a single lure I use the unpainted yellowmouth. When I make my double rigs i use the H2O unpainted from Academy.
Great topic Lawrence, I researched this a year ago and it lead to unpainted jig heads. |
If your favorite tackle store doesn't carry them, ask for them. You can contact me or Josh here if need be.

I never use painted heads really because they always get messed up on oyster reefs and pretty much turn into non-painted. Besides I don't think it really makes a difference.
