Henderson High & Dry

Decided to take a chance and drop the yak in this morning since most of the lauches are closed off to boats. With the full moon last night and recent high pressure was not expecting much. Was I ever wrong. Started at around 7:00 and by 8:30 had a stringer limit of keepers. Dropped a few and turned loose a lot of small ones. Threw one bait and rod all morning as the bite never really stopped probably boated 30 fish but nothing really big. Never encountered another boat until I picked up at 10:00 am.

Gotta love that basin man!

Good job. Probably very quiet out there.

If the launches are closed, where did you launch at? Just curious. I've been wanting to try Henderson, but when I heard the launches were closing, figured it was too late. Passed by on the way to Lake Charles a few weeks ago and thought it would be perfect to go through the pirogue in.

Years ago when they did the last big draw down, we tore up the bass at all the points under I-10. It was too easy.

You can still put a paddlecraft in at most of the launches including Kerns but the ramps are closed. The public landing is barracaded now.

I'm not familiar with the boat launches at Henderson. I have only fished there once. Just out of curiosity, why are the launches closed and do they close every year at this time?

Water is very low....they lowered it to try to kill the grass and lillys like they do every year and fail miserably.

I can say in recent years what ever area they are spraying is like a dead zone for a few days after. Used to encounter the guys doing the spraying and ask what areas they were working and avoid them for a while.

The magic did not last long. Went out again this morning starting at daylight. Caught 2 small bass off the bank before launching the yak thought it was going to be a good day. Fished for 2 hours and did not catch a fish over 12". Don't know where the big fish went but could not get one to bite today. Still had fun catching a dozen small bass.

Launched my boat today out of the Basin Landing and was able to get around ok but bumped into a lot stuff under the surface. Caught and released about a dozen bass and several choupic. All bass were between 10"-14". Caught most getting out the boat and walking the banks.

Very cool... We poked around Toledo when it was way down a couple of years back, interesting to see what's normally hidden  ...
