Any Ideas?? Honda 4wheeler issues

I have one of those Honda's that shifts electronically.......it's been acting up......was told the battery needed to be replaced.......did that....It's shifting this morning....but on and off

Hmm, sounds like you need a tech and a voltmeter.

Cuz had a bike doing the same thing but it was the battery.

keakar 09-21-2014 03:47 PM

in cases like this its mostly voltage related so if you replaced the battery then ohm out the main battery cables and check for any corrosion on them or any plug connectors in the circuits used for power or signals to shift.

im pretty sure you will find your problem is a bad wire or plug connection somewhere, but I will add that it could also be something on the opposite end of the wires so if its not the battery it could be the electronic shift mechanism itself but that's very very rare to ever go bad but it does happen

Honda

There is a voltage regulator on the right hand side of the bike mounted to the frame above the rear wheel. Solved my battery/ electrical issues.

Its gonna be the tilt sensor. Located front underside of motor. What year and model ya got? Will try to get ya more info.

angle sensor most likely.

BuckingFastard 09-22-2014 12:11 PM

Looks like this......

Since were on the subject and y'all seem to be informed. Would a bad voltage regulator cause the battery to drain if the ignition is off. My battery is less than a year old and seems to die every month when not used.

simplepeddler 09-24-2014 02:11 PM

Sorry I'm late........I will get the year and model to you.........damn thing stated shifting last night.......

############ it's on 08 rancher

If the voltage regulator is bad your battery wont charge. Your battery is not getting a charge and sitting up only makes it worse. With electronics anything is possible.

Is your display flashing the neutral "N" or a gear number or dashes"--"? This will give you a code to whats failing. Most likely the angle sensor. Cheap fix ($18-$25 online). Give a dealer your model (ex. TRX420FE) and get part number and price for angle sensor. Part number should be something like 38800-HR3-A21 but I'm not sure of your model ATV.

I suppose it could if there was a problem with it but more often what you describe is a battery issue.

to test take the battery leads off when you store it and if its still charged the next time then its related to the bike and not the battery.

those cheap motorcycle batteries at walmart are famous for doing exactly as you describe, sometimes I had to replace them every single year, that's why I only use the yausa batteries now. they don't cost that much more but almost always last 5-6 years or more being completely trouble free.

Had the same problem, I had a shift lever made and installed.

This may sound stupid...but...

I've got a Hondo 450 ES. Have the same trouble and it was low voltage...BUT...also changed the oil and it shifts much better now too.

One more question. On a 04' Rubicon when I have the gas in the on position it runs but bogs down when given throttle. But, when on reserve it runs great but leaks gas when not running from the bottom of the bowl. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a stuck float in the carb.

Okay.......when it does not shift in usually a blinking "N"..........can you send me a pic of where the dang angle sensor is located?

Sorry to be a pain ........
