Barnes Vortex
 

I went to sight in my .35 whelen today and used the Barnes Vortex 180 grain. Had 5 duds in the box. Anyone else have problems with these bullets?

I've shot a box and a half of the vortex through my x bolt with no problems. The problem could be the ammo, but it may also be your rifle.

I could see maybe if it weren't a crack barrel. Thompson Center. There's a punch mark on the primer so I don't think it's the gun

I use those in my 35 also and never had a problem.

We've done a lot of work with flawed primers. Photograph the five primer strikes in high resolution and attach it. Light strikes are easy to spot. Did you note if anything was off with the ones that fired? Delayed ignition? Poor accuracy? Wild velocities (if you chronographed)?

Barnes is owned by the Freedom Group (owns Remington also) so it will be interesting to see how their customer service handles this if you send them in for inspection.

Out of not one but 2 CVA Apex's!
Customer service was sappose to send me stamped packaging to return them and they never did! After 2 guns I finally got Remington coreloks to shoot extremely well!

I can't speak for the factory loaded Barnes, but I buy the tipped tsx's and have a guy at the gun shop loads them for my daughter's .243. The exit hikes on deer and hogs is truly impressive. I'm sold on the performance of that projectile.

Guess I should've kept them but I threw them as far as I could lol. I'm just gonna switch to Hornady. Come to think of it, they didn't group too well. I'm sure bad batches happen but @$40 or so a box, you'd think that wouldn't happen. If I have bad luck with Hornady, I'll be looking into my gun. I doubt it is the gun though.

Hand loads don't cost any more, and the bullet to bullet consistency is much better. Only way to go if you are spending $2 per bullet anyways.

Hornady LEVERevolutuon may give you problems too. Since they are made for tube fed magazines, the primers are a little tougher. Had more complaints about these than any other at the gun shop.
