Florocarbin leader.
Got a question need some advice. I'm making a trip to big lake next month and I'll be using braided line. Should I or should I not use a florocarbin leader? And if so what lb test would y'all suggest. Any other tips about catching some reds in the area would be appreciated. It will be my first experience with this type of fishing. Thanks guys.

I catch reds on trotline all winter with #12 black twine with a piece of shrimp 3/4 inch long on a stainless hook. Just my opinion , I don't think floro necessary. Personally don't like braid. Original stren 14# takes care of reds n trout for me......

If using braid i would use mono or fluoro leader. You will be glad you did if you get hung up and need to break off.

This is really the main reason I was asking about a leader because of getting hung up and maybe needing to break it off. What about water clarity.

I've got a question. Why use a leader while fishing braid? Doesn't it defeat the purpose of the braid? Never liked braided line unless I'm fishin heavy grass.

Well I heard that fishing those oyster reefs can be very abrasive and a braided line is less abrasive. Idk

I can understand that but when fishing plastics how often is your line 3 or 4 feet from the hook just Layin on the bottom?

So how would one go about putting lunkers in ones face without braid?

They wouldn't
State records don't even count if they weren't caught on braid, check it

30-40lb braid with a 15-20lb floro leader. The easiest and strongest knot I found is the alberto knot to join the two lines.

Our family has some state records caught on braid.
The form has places to list line and rod and reel, but there is no disqualification of LOWA maintained records for using braid, unless you are talking fly fishing or something else.
