The wife wanted a lab for her birthday so i got her a black lab!!! His name is jax and Man he is growing fast!! What kid of food should i get for him as he gets bigger. Right now he is eating some soft food in a can.

What brand are you guys using?

Keep him on a quality brand puppy food for the 1st year. Purina or Iams are reasonably priced. No Ole Roy

Alpha, It's really important to grow large breed dogs slowly.I recommend large breed puppy food daily. I prefer Purina, Iams/Eukanuba , or Hills foods for puppies. Make sure to measure the amount of food fed too. Pups rate of growth is directly related to calories consumed. To help avoid joint problems as adults slower growth in puppies is desired. Good luck w the pup.I'm sure the kids will have a blast w him!!

Cute pup! The type of food you feed depends on how active the dog will be. A field trial dog will need different food than a dog laying around the house. I was using Black Gold Premium when my lab was younger and hunted. I had good results with Black Gold. She has been heatlhy, always had energy and always has had a nice coat. Now that she has gotten up there in age I've switched her food to Purina Pro Plan Senior since she's not as active. Plenty of good dogs have been raised on Ole Roy or table scraps so I'm not sure how much a difference a premium food makes but that's what I use. For now I would stick to puppy food until he's about a year old and his adult teeth come in. I'm using Purina Pro Plan Large Breed for our golden puppy. Best of luck!

Aquaholic is absolutly right. If they are grown too fast they can have joint problems.

C-Bass2mouth 08-28-2014 03:45 PM

Rock star or ribbon dog??

Quackhead62 08-28-2014 03:47 PM

I have fed mine Purinia One puppy food the entire first year then switched him to the Purinia One large bread food. The most important thing when buying dog food is to make sure the first ingrenaint is meat not fish meal or any other kind of meal. You want a good source of protien in the food as well.

fine looking dog. Be sure to feed your dog a good quality food, but you don't have to spend a lot on the higher brands. I feed my lab Diamond Hi Energy. $30 for 50lbs
