Mermantau/Gulf Question

Does anybody fish the mouth of the Mermantau where it enters the Gulf? Are there jetties there? Bull Reds, Drum, Trout, Crabs? Please advise. Any tips, help, suggestions, advice and experiences regarding this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks......

Outside of the jetties on an outgoing tide. I have only tried the east side. Carolina rigged cracked crab and HOLD ON!!

Near the bridge can be really good if the current is not too strong

East side inside jetties also good as well

There is a jettied pass over there. I've heard the fishing is good for bull reds, but I have not fished it. The nearby beaches are good. In the unlikely event that Calcasieu is ever overfished, I think the extra distance from LC would leave the fishing there pretty good.

If the water gets right u can run up river to the catfish locks and smoke the specks also but water conditions need to be right.

The fishing out of Mermantau really heats up in mid summer after spring fresh water run-off. Mud lake produces very good red fishing on an out-going tide. However, I fish mostly specks on the near shore well heads and rigs between Mermentau and Joseph's Harbor. Fish in close to structure as possible..lots of toothy fish on the outside of wells. Beach can be very productive at times.

"Toothy fish" meaning sharks or mackerel, both, or something else?

Both! Macks will tear up equipment in no time out there. Problem is the water gets way too clear just a mile or two out the pass. The toothy gang hangs out all around the rigs. Pitch your jigs under the structure as far as possible; nice size specks out there.

YES.....

The actual line is from the western shore of the Mermentau river going straight north up to hwy 82 at Oak Grove.
