struggling with fishing strings.

hey guys, im trying to figure out which type of line can i use on my open face cast reel for specks cux im still struggling with some brands like sterns or power pro i even got some 12 pound test line but they still pop the lines once i get the specks up near the boat. i dont want any braind line like sprider or whatever. any advice will be very helpful.... :pissed:

I like to use Sufix Siege in the camo color and I have no problem casting or catching fish... some people use leaders but I don't even do that... A lot easier to re-tie without having to mess with a leader... I usually get 12lb test.

trilene

only monofilament i use is berkley "trilene" or "big game"
no issues, casts for miles, doesn't have hardly any memory and lasts for years, i restring my reels every two to three years unless i get some barnacle or reef rash on them, berkley 12lb test on my open face reel that i use for specks only time it has ever broke was when i get wrapped around something

I use stren only, I have had issues with berkley big game and suffix even though other people will swear by it. It kinda comes down to preference i believe.

keep in mind, mono stretches. the more line the more stretch, less line less stretch. with a fish next to the boat, there is little line to stretch and if your line gets nicked during the fight is what usually causes breakage. I never reel past a poles length of line and only swing small fish. With my rod that has braid I can swing larger fish.

A trick is to use a 18" piece of 30 lb leader material between your line and lure. This will cut down on abrasion from the fight. If not you will need to re-tie after a few fish, this may be your true problem.

Hope this helps...

If everything is breaking ,sounds like you have a bad tip or rod eye cutting the line when under tension, Run a q tip around the inside of the eyes and tip. If it snags cotton anywhere change that eye.

I use 15 lb Berkley big game for specks and reds, no problems here!

i havent had any problems with suffix elite....been using it the past couple years no issues...I found big game has more line memory than the suffix...as mentioned before could be a knot issue.

Try a palomar knot. I have been using braid on my spinning reels for about 5 years and I will never go back to mono on them again. They throw better and are more sensitive

This...

is the secret to all braided lines....

The only knot you should use is Palomar and the double uni knot to connect braid to leader.

Seriously... every other knot when used with braid slips.. the stuff is to slick.

THIS!!!!

thanks everyone for yall adivces.... will try to see if that the case... by the way it wasnt my knot i was having problems with it was the string cux a few times i seen it my self when it popped halfway from my pole instead of near the hook.

x2, been using Big Game for years has never let me down.

Garfish 10-11-2013 12:38 PM

Big Game and Ande Back Country in 10-15 lb range for me. Check the tip of your rod.

jf522 10-11-2013 04:30 PM

I always go back to Big Game!

jf522 10-11-2013 04:31 PM

Old Power Pro never broke on me but Slick 8 has.

jf522 10-11-2013 04:35 PM

Check your drag. If the reel has not been serviced in a while it might be a good idea. Some of the reels I work on I will spend a little more attention on the drag system. Like use Cal's drag grease and upgrade the washers also.

I use 20 and 30lb Power Pro braid and never had a problem, last much longer too. When fishing under a cork I use 17lb Cajun line mono for my leader.

iron man 10-11-2013 08:15 PM

I use trilene big game. All I've ever liked really. Not too crazy about braid and never was. I have 12 or 14lb test with a 20lb test leader under the cork. That reminds me, I have to change out my line.
