Headed out of Fourchon

If all conditions are right we are going to try to hit some rigs no more than 10-12 miles out. What is the best way to catch cobia, TT, or whatever out there? steel leader or not? Looking for tips and pointers.

Thanks

No need for steal leaders. Your gonna be In prime mangrove territory.

BROWN FIN 08-12-2013 12:53 PM

Steel leaders. You'll be fine with some 25-35 lb fluorocarbon.

What is the best way to catch said mangrove?

Fluorocarbon and live bait (croaker) for beginners. Don't go deep like for red snapper. Throw towards the rig and hold on.

I have only been on a mangrove trip once, and here is what i learned. They stay close to the legs of the platform. We anchored on the upcurrent side and hooked onto the platform. The guide left his boat in reverse to hold us away from the platform. We fished with pogies on the bottom and hammered em. This was 8 miles offshore out of fourchon. Don't know what platform we were on. This was a few years ago.

Cobia:

Curl tail on 2oz. Feather jigs. Drop down the rig legs to the bottom and jig up speratically.
If there on surface flip live mullet on fluorocarbon litter-

Mangrove:
hold boat up current-cut bucket of chum-drop handful at rig legs. You will see them coming up the rig legs, usually tight on leg. Hide small circle hook in piece of chum. Throw hand full of chum and drop your bait down with it simultaneously so it falls even. When he eats make sure you got heavy line, thick fluorocarbon litter 40-60lb., and pull them out of the rig. They will mess you up in the rig if you don't go heavy on em.

I love going out of fouchon, large numbers of ling come in during these later months. Best Cobia trips I've had been of out of there

i went last weekend to fourchon, lots of cobia 5-10 offshore. i hooked 2 nice ones off some bouys due south of east timbilier island. 1 oz jighead and a big pink curly tail grub. we had to drop down to 30lb fluro to hit mangroves that were 7-12 miles offshore

Find out where they dump the food over from the platform and bring some dry puppy food. Take small handful and throw where they drop the food over. Easy and quick! Works for me everytime!
