Cobia Out of Big Lake
Has anyone had any luck catching cobia at the wellheads and such out of Bug lake? I have heard they get thick around 10-15 miles out from the jetties. I am thinking about making a trip Sunday to try.

Any general pointers? I am planning on bringing some shrimp and some power bait eels I have. I also have some jigs. I guess I will start about 10 miles out straight out from the jetties.

Watch your prop wash when pulling around rigs. They sneak up right up to your motor sometimes. Make sure you have a rod rigged up before you launch. They just pop up sometimes and you need to be ready. If you hook one keep it in the water for a few minuets and make sure it doesn't have some friends hanging around.

Thanks for the advice. I am also planning on catching a few hardheads on the way out to use as bait too. This will be my first time trying this, so it should be fun.

Bucktail jigs and big white curl tail grubs on a big jig head work good. Also if you have live bait (croaker, mullet, crab, hardhead etc ) that's crack for a ling. Try rigs and buoys. Don't pass up the single stand rigs. For some reason they like those. If you find some grass mats check them also.

I will get some appropriate jigs and grubs before we go. Thanks!

Remember. They have to be 33" to the fork. Not end of the tail.

I will remember the size. Thanks for the reminder! If we don't find any within 15 miles, we may go as far as 20 depending on the weather. Slick calm and I will be a no brainer.

May try that. We have fished out of Venice many times, but not out of Big Lake offshore. We will probably stuck around the rigs and wellheads. I will just be glad to get out of the dang house.

Squid on a bare hook works well too... If you see some on top and they don't want to bite anything.. Try putting a slice of lunch meat(ham or whatever you got to make samiches) on a hook and sling it out in front of them.. Caught em like that before too!!

I love to chum with porgies and bury a hook in one of the chunks with 40-60lb fluorocarbon. As long as the hardtails aren't thick it works well.
