Biggest Trout Of My Life

I was fishing the mouth of oyster bayou one WINDY day last spring. The tide was rushing in and being pushed by a 25mph south wind. I saw some mullet up on the shell corner on the left side going into the bayou. As I was drifting up to it I heard a splash and looked up and saw a huge fish flopping on the bank. I thought it was a red but upon further examination realized it was the biggest trout I had ever seen. I fired up the motor a ran the boat up to the shells and jumped out and grabbed her. She was just a hair over 29" and fat as hell. Took some quick pics and released her. I'm guessing close to 9#. I've caught 4 right at and barley over 7lbs and this girl made them look small. Wish I had a scale that day.

I had always heard trout didnt get that big by being stupid. I guess we need to re-evaluate that statement. You saved her life lol

She Seriously was 3 feet up on the bank she crushed that mullet with some force. I figured the trot gods would bestow good karma upon me for releasing her. Hasn't happened yet. Numbers but not size. I have t caught one over 6 in 2 years. I wish i would have had a scale. Her gut was huge like they had 12" mullet in it. I'm sure she was well over 8.

congrats on the release---i know where i'd be fishin for a while! had a friend do something similar with a flounder at the edge of the surf---he released it into the grease.

Clampy 03-19-2013 04:56 PM

A Flounder would have received the same fate of grease bath or maybe a oven sauna.

Crazy story, what I got out of that is big trout bite in heavy winds..

Clampy 03-19-2013 09:03 PM

The waves and current were crushing on to that point and they had some big 10" mullet holding really tight on it.

Gasper Master 03-19-2013 09:07 PM

Wow, glad you released her. That surely is crazy.
