yamaha 25 worth it?

I'll start by saying I'm new to this. I have a 1985 Evinrude 25hp that I got running. It wasn't pissing so I guess the water pump is out and the carb needs cleaning, probably needs a complete over haul. Not sure what the cost will be. That being said, I found a 06 Yamaha 25hp for $1500. Is that price reasonable? Should I get the 85 Evinrude running or buy the 06 Yamaha?
Any help would be appreciated.

question is why would it need a complete overhaul? has it been used that much & wore out? Water pump & carb cleaning is cheap!
If the yahama is good shape $1500 is not a bad price.
6 one way half a dozen the other!

3 cylinder yamaha? Good motor

Shallow Runner 02-22-2013 03:10 AM

Man those old evinrudes are hearty motors. I agree water pump and carbs are cheap. If you do decide to go with the yamaha, let me know, I might be interested in the evinrude.

Yamaha will probably have a little more power as well. You could probably pick up the Yamaha and sell the rude to recoop some of your money.

Yamaha stopped making 3cylinder in 2001 if I remember right because I bout one new the last yr they were built

An older motor isn't a bad thing. But finding parts for that will become increasingly difficult. I say buy the Yamaha.

I have an 86 johnson 25hp and parts arent hard to find at all. I seen the posting last night for that yamaha but i dont think its listed anymore?

Vermillionaire 02-22-2013 10:13 AM

Cody, have you seen the mod for those old motors. If you can find a 35hp carb & intake manifold you can add 10hp.
I'm thinking I'll just fix up the evinrude

Shallow Runner 02-22-2013 11:59 AM

You can take 40hp tohatsu carbs and put them on that 3 cylinder yamaha. With a little port work and a few other small touches that baby will fly. My cousin has one that's runs 42 on a 15 war eagle.

I dont think the yamaha that was posted was a 3cyl. I think it was just 2 stroke. It would've been a good deal if it was. There was an 01 yamaha 3cyl on craiglist for $2,000 a few days ago.

Yes, i have seen the mod. Ive been keeping an eye out for a 35 to try it. Here's a guy who did it. Pretty good read

Yes sir, and I'm positive about the 40 D tohatsu carbs. Both carbs are made by TACC and they will fit with minor mods. I sold my Mega 25 In Little Rock last month for $3000.

I wonder what they'd pay up there for a 40 Merc?!

Probably about the same as down here. The three-cylinder 25's are hot up there because the prime duck hunting spot is restricted to 25 HP with a 4am launch. Therefore those guys want to get the holeshot and keep it to get the better spots.

Ah, gotcha. Didn't know about restrictions up there.

weedeater 02-23-2013 12:45 PM

The guy that bought my motor told me that if you could get a Yamaha 3cyl, Suzuki 3cyl or Tohatsu Mega that was in running condition they would pay top dollar up there

flounder_smacker 02-23-2013 05:03 PM

vermillionaire if you decided to scrap the evinrude im looking for that exact lower unit.

Keywest18 02-23-2013 07:26 PM

Does your evinrude have electric start? Or the silencer box?

Vermillionaire 02-24-2013 09:45 PM

E25RCOS I believe. Pull start single carb
