300 blackout

anyone have one, shoot one, think its worth buying? just bought a new lower, considering building or buying an upper. I like the idea of it, and will probably reload my own rounds, but I hope it becomes a more common round so that ammo for it becomes more available.

No Blackout but I do have a 6.8 SPC. It's sweet shooting and pretty versatile. Reloading is straightforward and the round seems to perform better in a shorter barrel in case you ever wanted to go SBR with a can.

Let us know if you get the Blackout and how it handles.

i've read a blackout with a can is the way to go...i just don't want the G O V knowing I have a supressed gun...

I'd go with the 6.5 Grendel.....300 black out don't impress me like I thought it would.

Can you explain? Is this based on experience or research?

Hopedale Hustler 12-06-2012 01:41 PM

Research...I shot the 6.5 last weekend Buy never have shot the blackout....but on paper I like the fact that the 6.5 is a way more capable round...it's ha much more multipurpose uses and much better performance at longer distances....the blackout is designed to be used by socom and special forces teams that will have suppressed weapons at shorter ranges...and let's be real here how many of us have suppressors??? If u do then that's awsome and I wish I was in your shoes but I know I don't and this is y I choose 6.5 over the blackout.

We're working on a project right now studying the terminal ballistics of subsonic 30 caliber guns. There are very few bullets that will expand and perform well at subsonic speeds. The 208 grain AMAX will tumble after 4-6" of penetration. We can get a 220 grain Partition to expand by shooting it backwards with a big hollow point cavity added using a #3 center drill. A company called Lehigh defense makes a solid copper 200 grain ME that expands down to 830 fps and performs OK in gelatin, but I would not expect double lung hit deer to drop right there because the energy delivered is only 300 to 450 ft lbs (depending on impact velocity).

I think the 125 grain ballistic tip is probably the best bullet in the .300 blackout or the .300 Whisper for deer. The 155 AMAX is probably very good also. But the 6.5's are probably the best bet for deer in the platform unless you really need to be subsonic.

The 300 blackout is a .223 case necked up to a .308 bullet. They're subsonic(speed of sound <1115-1140fps) rounds designed to be used with a suppressor.
