going through the locks

going to stay around lake charles this weekend, and the camp is on the water, but north of the freshwater barrier (locks north of gun bridge). Anyone know the procedure for going through them?

BassYakR 08-02-2012 03:06 PM

Just pull up to em.... They will open them for u as u come in. Be aware it is a no wake area also.

PaulMyers 08-02-2012 03:07 PM

Pull up to it and they will open it for you. With the rains we've had, it might be open when you get there.

It was closed yesterday and the water was moving pretty hard from south over the lil spill way area

I figured the water would still be high on the fresh water side.

What kind of boat will you be in?

BassYakR 08-02-2012 03:42 PM

River always kicks my *** when bass fishing... So im the wrong person for info on that. Maybe hydro or huntin fool will chime in and help u out with that. They have been very helpful to me.

I know you didn't paddle from the barrier.

Yes, bass and bream can and are cought in the river and West Fork. Where are you headed?

bull1134 08-02-2012 03:45 PM

18 ft bowrider, I could make the distance fine, but checked the salinity, and it's pretty low down there, so figuring where i'll be, it'll be nothing.

You might be able to catch reds at the barrier. Above the barrier, bream will be no problem, bass can be caught but its a lot more work.

In your boat it might take you 15-20 minutes to Lake Charles and another 5-10 to get to Prien Lake from Moss Bluff. Some of the best fishing up North is in between Lake Charles and Prien.

yeah, I love that area, always catch somethin there, havn't been for bream in forever, might try that. reds and flounder are the main thing I target

You might have a wait at the Railroad bridge if you can't go under it.

KDM 08-02-2012 04:35 PM

Contact railroad bridge on VHF channel 13. Sometimes you have to call them multiple times for them to answer.

True, I forgot about that. Never had a boat that wouldn't make it under.

bull1134 08-02-2012 04:49 PM

I can make it under, but barely, love those locks up there, always done well there for a few different types of fish

Top Dawg 08-02-2012 04:51 PM

I waited over 2 hours at the railroad bridge before.

Btw. My uncle has been killing the bass on the river.
