Super Tuning

Ok, so I have two older Calcutta 250's and have heard that some folks get them "Super Tuned"...What does this mean? They both work great and I love them, but if I can get better performance or make them hold up better, I would certainly be in to that. If someone could educate me on what this is and where I could get this done. Live in Baton Rouge area....

Thanks in advance.

Basically clean and polish.

Only place I've dealt with is Synergy Reel Tuning in Bryan, TX.

Think they also upgrade the bearings to ceramic.

Yeah, if that's what you want. I had a 100D that had the stock bearings and that thing would free spool forever. It's not a bad idea to upgrade 'em, tho "cents" you're going to that trouble, anyway.

It means to totally break down the reel and get all the old grease and oils out and off and regrease and oil as lightly as possible. Also to clean out the bearings bone dry if you do not want to upgrade and relube with extreamly light weight oil. Pollish main gear and pinion gear. Also to install carbon fiber drag washers greased with either Cals or Shimano grease.

On a curado e7 with standard stock bearings I can get 1min and 15sec free spool and jump up the drag to about 14lbs.

With Abec 5 bearings i can get 1min and 45sec free spool.

I just ordered some abec5 bearings. Can't wait. The way I've cleaned my bearings in the past was pop the out and wash with alcohol. Then a drop of lube. Works amazing!

I found an article explaining it. Kids happened and I never got around to try it. Forewarning though- the website colors are hideous and the guy uses !'s every other sentence. http://super-tuning.home.mindspring.com/i1.html.

Great information.... very detailed.

Only thing that would be very hard to do at "home" would be sanding and polishing the spool shaft. Maybe that could be done with a fair degree of smoothness by hand.

Has anyone "super tuned" at "home" like described in this article?

coastalobsession 07-13-2012 07:25 AM

Do it all the time for me and my customers. All you need is: simple green. Carb cleaner, brass polish, mothers, and clr.

Never done the full super tune. But, looks like a perfect weekend for it. Might give it a shot. Wish my bearings would come in first.

Bearings came in. Ended up doing some polishing also. This this casts ungodly. Time and a few bucks very well spent!
