What type of fishing line do you guys prefer? Mono fluorocarbon, braided??? Also , what pound test line...primarily for specs and reds....thanks

I use mono and braid.I use 20lb PP on my spinning reel and 15lb big game ans suffix seige 12lb on my baitcast.fluorocarbon is nice but has more memory then mono.but it is more abrasion resistant

All the varieties have threir pros and cons.
I use the Cajun Red Mono for most applications...
depending on the species and what it may rub up against under the surface, I'll use either the 20lb or the 12lb

You dont break the line every cast?
I bought the red line once...

OP, I spool up with big game in 10 or 12 lb. Every now and then I'll spool up with 20 is 30 lb pp.

Me and my dad tried the red line once and once only. Broke off more than I could or can count.

I'm only breaking on the snags, not the fish - for me it casts so much better than the Big Game that it makes up for it

spotchasin 04-20-2012 09:52 AM

I use 12 lb suffix elite mono for all of my inshore reels.

I find big game 10 lb to be the best cast/knot/abrasion resist for the money. But, its all preference and if the red line (of death) works for you, then keep on keepin on. :)

Yep, I only bought it once too. Spooled a reel up, went fishing, unspooled and threw the rest away. It was breaking when cinching knots. I was mad. :banghead:

Can't go wrong w/ Big Game mono for the money. It's reliable and tough. Been using it a long time.

helpful hint.... use a backspool of mono 1/2 to 2/3 full. tie a uni to uni knot with however much fluoro you think you need. this will make your spools/line last longer avoiding memory or dullness and also save you from wasting a whole spool of line.

10-12 lb mono generally for saltwater is what i use.

I love flourocarbon. you have to use the decent stuff tho. my favorite is P-line Halo. Very expensive but worth every penny. I fish with 12lb test only. the abrasion resistance and break strength is unmatched. I use braid on a few of my spinning reels. I also have one curado spooled up with 20lb power pro that i use for carolina rigging. I just bought the reel and it was tuned up and my father backlashed it so bad that it took him 3 days to get it all out. also, if i'm going to be using mono for topwater and fishing corks and stuff like that, i like trilene xl. A buddy of mine just spooled up his spinning reel with some power pro super slick, and I think that will be my next line of choice on my spinning reels.

I used big game for years. It was good for the money. Been using suffix the last couple of years and love it. Best mono I've used i like the 12lb elite. The siege is nice to but I find the elite casts better.

MathGeek 04-23-2012 07:03 PM

30 lb power pro with a fluorocarbon leader of 15-80 lbs appropriate to target and conditions.

LPfishnTIM 04-23-2012 07:06 PM

10pound seaguar flouro, I think it last longer then any other flouro. cast good and is clear too.

Top Dawg 04-23-2012 07:08 PM

We caught a sailfish on 12lb Cajun red line on a Calcutta 100 wit no leader. I'm a believer!
