I have two training videos to post but can't email them to myself because they are too long. Don't have a youtube account and don't have time to make one. What can I do to get these on a thread?

meaux fishing 02-28-2012 10:58 AM

how long are they?

Is the dog whining from the pinch collar?

cajunforeman 02-28-2012 01:17 PM

Looks good! I know this helped scout out a lot especially when we did walking stick fetch.

PaulMyers 02-28-2012 01:26 PM

Bob, I put the second video up.

+1

Thanks gentlemen!
First video is walking fetch which is done after the dog has completed force fetch. It basically Proofs force fetch and reinforces the command. If the dog misses, I usually try once more prior to applying pressure. Pressure comes in the form of a pinch collar (power steering for dogs), and keeps my hand off the collar. Yes, Shawn she is whinning to get to the bumper and causing her own pressure by pulling against the collar. We have transitioned to a choke chain but for the video I wanted the pinch on her. This puppy is 8 months old and behind due to the owner being away for the entire month of December, her brother is a month ahead and not nearly as talented.

Second video is how I start teaching force fetch; ear pinch starts the process of teaching the dog to open it's mouth with stimuli. It's more finesse and timing than brute force. Sometimes it can be a quick process and other (brother to this dog took 4 weeks) times can take weeks to teach a dog to turn off the pressure. Soft dogs at times take more teaching with less pressure than harder dogs. When done correctly, you will end up with a dog who's tail is wagging after a session is complete.

These videos would have been a big no no when I first started training due to everyone being scared of the tree huggers but I believe if knowledge is shared, more people will understand that force fetch is not about beating dogs. Thanks for allowing me to share some of my knowledge S/C Crew.

Thanks for sharing Raymond. I can't wait to start with my pup although she is only 5 weeks now. Do you use any one person's method for training? As far as a book or video I mean.

Raymond 02-28-2012 04:02 PM

Have followed Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training for the past 14 years and it has worked for me. His program is very good and expensive but worth the $$$. Don't look at the cost like you would a regular dvd, you will need to watch each dvd multiple times in order to get the most out of your investment. You can also find used copies on retrievertraining.net and entryexpress.net classifieds.

Outstanding! Who's program and how old is your dog. I have a guy training with me now that doesn't want to use the collar, he understands the limitations of training without it but is willing to work longer and harder. Good luck with your journey.
