The V. Bay Challenge

Saturday's report....
We got to the bay before daylight started heading towards Dry Reef and was introduced with dirty rough water so we went around the Point to fish the hammock and some other little spots down there that we know. We were greeted with tons of birds working white trout and lady fish. Fished there a little ways and got to see a flounder nail some mullet on top, it was awesome! All i saw was a big flash of white; i caught him too after that. Anyways we caught about 150 mullet in the cast net just incase, and then ran out the pass. Water was dirty and nothing was hitting, so we ran out to find clean water. Ended up making it all the way out to Tiger Shoals and the first thing i saw was a HUGE tripletail. I've never caught one before, but have watched Capt Eric Dumas catch them on his website, so I knew what i need to do. I casted right in front of him and ran my sand eel jr right in front of his face then BAM! He nailed it, but as soon as I set the hook he'd already spit it. We then anchored out and got on some pretty fast trout action with the popping cork, then as soon as it started it stopped. I fished the bottom, middle, and top of the water but nothing. I then, tried my luck with live bait. I've never had anyluck with it, never really knew how to even set it up. I just put a circle hook with a weight
Hooked my mullet through the lips and casted him out. I got hit EVERY SINGLE CAST, but couldn't hook them. Must of used like 20 mullets, then an idea hit me.. Take a treble hook off my mirrodine and use that. So thats what i did and I was pulling in trout left and right. Ended up with those forty fish, not much but my dad was feeling kind of bad out there so I didn't have his help and it was my cousins first spec trip, but he did real good.

Nice fish dude, sometimes all they want is the live stuff. Just to let you know, when I fish live bait I use a small #6 treble hook...works great.

If you get to the quintana launch EARLY you can catch all the mullet you want in that lil cove by the camps.

jpeff31787 08-26-2009 10:31 AM

dam didn't know that one lol Do you have to go to the end of it or just right there at the point where it meets quintana? Our friends have a boat lift all the way at the end of it, and we used to catch them there, i just forgot all about that spot. I was talking about around the hammock if you pass up the camps theres a cut that goes into a little cove and theres bait everywhere

Montauk17 08-26-2009 10:40 AM

Right when you pass up the bulkhead in the quintana leaving the launch, right after the no wake zone. Theres a lil cove on the left.

jpeff31787 08-26-2009 10:44 AM
