Cajun Quiz
I'm relatively new to this site. Its been ten years since I've lived in south Louisiana. Just wondering if anyone still knows what a (spelling might be wrong so go with pronunciation) BAG-A-LON is ? I fished with my pop-pop from vermilion bay to the texas line until I moved away they were common in the area.

I am not sure I am pronouncing the word you are referring to (Bag-A-Lon) correctly but if its what I am thinking of, I have heard the word Big-a-no (not the actual spelling but rather the phenetic spelling). A Big-a-no is a salt water snail. Some people actually collect them from docks (below the water line) and off shore platforms. They boil them like other seafood and eat them. I tried one and it was kind of chewy with very little taste.

Answer is cannonball jellyfish (also called cabbage head jellyfish). I tried to find an image online but they had spots. These things are unspotted white and look like an oblong volleyball with very short tentacles (maybe 3-4 in tops). They used to swarm in the Mermentau and the lower Vermilion when the water ran salty in August. I can remember snagging 10 of them for every red caught on more than a few occasions. These things are apparently edible (in Japan anyway). I wish I would have paid more attention to the cajun names of things when I was a teenager, I know many but forget a ton. Good guesses guys.
