Hey guys can you set a hoop net in a pond and catch catfish or is it best to put hoop nets in a river with moving water.

If it is your/friends private pond you can catch fish any way you please as long as the pond doesn't have an egress/ingress from public waters. Also don't need any license to fish said ponds.

As others have said, moving water is better for hoop nets, whether it be lakes, rivers, canals or streams.

My dad used to run hoop nets. He would usually run about 40 ranging in size from 4'-6' hoops. Running water was the key to good catches. We never used any kind of bait in our nets. We did however put one in our pond from time to time with bait, but mainly to catch the turtles. WE would catch some fish in it too though.

I've never set nets in a lake or pond but I heard you had to set them vertical.

Never heard of that and I have been fishing all my life. Hoop nets are always set horizontally on the bottom with a stake on one end and large weight on the other.
