Alligators, Anti-hunters, and absolute stupidity

I realize the story is a couple of years old now, and I'd heard of a woman taking a big alligator in South Carolina, but it was just recently that I realized the absolute OUTRAGE that story has caused both in the United States and around the world. If you google Mary Ellen Mara-Christian from Massachusetts, you'll find tons of websites with her story, followed by unbelievably hateful comments toward her. Everything from cursing her lower than dog crap, to death threats. One site even posted her address and phone number. Thankfully, it was partially obscured, but a determined stalker could probably narrow it down. Along with the hateful anti-hunter's ignorant comments, occasionally someone with sense speaks up, even non-hunters once in a while. It's bad enough that the anti's rant on and on about us hunters taking deer and squirrels, but ALLIGATORS? They refuse to acknowledge the fact that alligators can and do sometimes attack people. Not so often here in Louisiana, but in other states they do. Even here in Louisiana they sometimes show up at city parks, neighborhoods, and even backyards AWAY from the swamps and marshes. It doesn't always make the news, but pets and livestock are killed. A boy from Slidell lost his arm a few years ago, swimming right near his own subdivision. Anyway, the facts and reasons for alligator hunting just get in the way of their emotional ranting. I guess you'd have to show them the mangled, half eaten corpse of a child. Even then, some would BLAME the child. What's WRONG with these people? You'd swear this woman from Massachusetts slaughtered a live human baby in public to read their comments. Of course, babies are slaughtered every day, and people just call it their "choice", but that's another post all together. They're uninformed, blindly ignorant, and outrageously hateful. I figure most of them have never seen an alligator outside of the zoo, much less in their own neighborhood. I'm sure some of you are familiar with this story, and I'm interested in your thoughts about this.

The antis pull this crap where they can get alot af press and attenton.
Years back PETA decided that they were going to protest the Grand isle tarpon rodeo.
They started posting that they would be coming down here to dirupt the fishermen and the rodeo. they were told to come on down and that it would be the last place they protested. None showed up.
They will not come and protest in the south where hunting and fishing is a way of life.
If it can get them a bunch of press and some donations they will show up.
When they will face danger of bodily harm they won't.
It's real easy to be a superhero on the internet.
The same thing was started about the swamp people show . It's easy to talk crap on the net but they won't come to piere part???

I am from north Louisiana, and I bet 50% of people up there have never seen an alligator outside the zoo. Sad but true, but as far as this story goes, PETA in my opinion sould be considered a terrorist organization. Most of these people live under a bubble anyways and when the crap eventually hits the fan, we want have to worry about them, because while we have guns and can go out and shoot something for dinner, their lettuce and bread will be hard to come by and they can't shoot or fish, so 'natural selection' will take care of them. I always say that we did not get to the top of the food chain by eating bread and rice

In Australia or New Zealand, people can legally go out and protest hunters! You are on the lake hunting and 20 people are withing 100 feet of you scaring off the ducks waving signs:eek: One accidentally got shot last year:grinpimp:

Actually, odd enough, I haven't seen anything directly from PETA about this, although the people making these horrible comments about this woman are likely of the same mind set. Oh, I'm sure PETA has spoken up about it, I just haven't seen that yet. Just anti-hunters in general. They'll say something like "the alligator was just satisfied to be safe in his own environment, then this b**ch comes along and kills him for absolutely no reason". Give me a BREAK! That's paraphrased, but the comments are pretty much like that. And that's the nice ones. One person said if she should have been killed by the gator, just STUPID, CRAZY stuff like that. There's several videos of the news story where the woman is talking about it o YouTube, and one guy commented that the alligator, shown dead on the pavement and hanging from a tractor on a chain, "looked sad". I'm NOT making this up! It's INSANE. South Carolina law requires the gator to be hooked, harpooned, or otherwise secured to the boat before they can kill it. Well this was a two hour fight, and eight shots didn't kill it, so either the woman or her guide severed it's spinal cord with a knife. Well, the anti's are saying she "tortured" the alligator for hours, shot it eight times, and then stabbed it. Alligators, as I understand, can SOMETIMES (not always) be about as hard to kill as an M1 Abrams tank. Small kill spot, requiring perfect shot placement. Even that doesn't work sometimes. The anti's just don't get it. They DON'T WANT to get it either.

And another one, where the gator went from 900 lbs to 1,025 pounds...

Click on the videos after they play, to read the comments on YouTube. Some people are AMAZINGLY stupid.

these comments from people are retarded, LA has a law any gator that is a nuisance that is 10ft or larger has to be terminated.

Was it PETA threatening to protest Swamp People, or just Anti's in general? Because I've looked a few times for PETA's statement about the show, but never found one. Just curious.

Retarded is putting it nicely. I'd say HATEFUL, WILLFULLY IGNORANT, and UNBELIEVABLY STUPID is more like it.

I wonder how "accidental" it was? Some Aussie duck hunter probably just said to hell with it, then BOOM! G'day mate!

The comments were not on PETA's web site they were on the networks web site. calling for boycots of the network and of Louisiana and of alligator products.

iron man 09-26-2011 12:02 PM

I can understand people protesting cruelty against animals that are actually pets like cats and dogs, but anything else is just retarded.

Swamp Critter 09-26-2011 12:17 PM

Yeah, I agree. People shouldn't be cruel to any animal, just for the sake of harming or killing them for no real reason. But hunting isn't cruelty. Even varmint hunting, you still try to put the animal down as quick as possible.

Oh, you must mean the History Channel's website. Well, I doubt it's working, because while alligator hides aren't selling for the big bucks like they used to, since Swamp People took off I hear that the demand for alligator meat is through the roof. People from out of state want to try it, and some dealers like cajungrocer.com ship it on dry ice in foam containers. If a few idiots want to boycott Swamp People, Louisiana, or our products, I doubt we'd notice it.

I bet she'll never make that mistake again. Of course, I may be giving her too much credit.
