Very sad, seems like they were either fishing the rocks or swimming, goes to show things can go sour in an instant

(Also if it's true. how amazing do you think it is that they said passersby saw 3 porpoises pushing the body back to beach

You can't fight that strong current. Your only hope in that situation is to try and stay afloat and wait for help to come.

When surf fishing it is a must to have a doughnet tied to your belt on a short rope .
Styrofoam ring that has mesh bag to put fish in.
If you get caught in a current you can drop your rod if you have to and the ring will float you.
Better to find an extra ring and put double rings on the mesh bag.
