Sucks....going to mess up hunting in that area for a while.

yeah i would guess all the deer and animals would head south then spread out down there. What would you say?

I'm curious to see what the fishing will be like in little and big Alabama

that looks bad hope more got out to high grounds..

The animals will be fine, maybe not the young turkeys, but the adults will be fine. The deer will come right back to the same place amazingly. I have friends with leases on MS River islands and when there place floods and then recedes the exact same deer will appear on their trail cameras next season:)

This is gonna sound crazy at first, BUT bare with me - there is a theory about deer and the timing of the rut. Areas around large rivers (MS, Atch) tend to have late ruts on into February sometimes, this is thought to be because of the historical flooding regimes like we are experiencing now. Typically the floods happen during late spring (like now), the does are pregnant now but will not drop until mid-summer like July in order for the floodwaters to recede and the vegetation is at its best at this time once the plants start sprouting back = nutrition for the fawn.

Along the coast, the rut is very early (this is why bowseason starts in September). This is thought to be due to the historical hurricane seasons which are summer to early fall. The doe needs to get her fawn on the ground early (Feb/Mar) which is when the most food is available during spring greenup, but also that fawn will be large enough to be able to 'get the hell out of dodge' if a hurricane pops up.

It all sorta makes sense in the grand scheme of things, or does it?:rotfl:

Im hoping that the current/high water might clear the woods up a little better from the down trees etc. last hurricane. Hard to hunt them turkeys in there now with all them down trees and debris. Anyone think so?

Hunting will be back to normal.....places we hunted in Ms along the river flood every year. They'll go right back to where they come from.

I'll still be hunting 3 rivers and red river wma, and I'm pretty sure its flooded over there too!

This past fall.....the woods were finally starting to clear up some from the downed tree/tree tops that Gustav left in the woods at Sherburne.

The high water may clear up some of the logs and limbs....but mostly will just move it to a different spot.

I read yesterday....that some of the Turkey were captured a couple weeks ago and had tracking collers put on them. Monday.....they located one of the turkeys out in a tree in the flooded woods. So it looks like sofar the Turkey are ok. Any nest or young bird are probably lost for this year.

RR is bone dry, 3 rivers is covered 100% anywhere from 1-20 foot of water.
