Ford diesel owners
I'm looking at buying an 02 super duty with the 7.3 turbo that has 252,000 miles. I know this varies depending on maitenence etc but is that alot of miles for this motor? How many miles can i expect to get out of the motor on average and what kinda gas mileage does it get? thanks

That engine is a beast. it will not get great fuel mileage, but is as dependible as they come. I would be more worried about the suspension, drive train and appearance of the truck. with that many miles there could be some issues, especially if its a 4X4.

Should get around 20 mpg. when they went to the 6.0 the mileage went to crap. Got a buddy that has about 400,000 on his 95 F250 7.3 and still going strong.

thanks guys....its a 2wd crew cab work truck. I've looked the truck over pretty hard and no leaks, drove it for a while today and everything feels good...no pulling etc......I just dont know anything about a diesel motor so i'm wary about maintenence costs.

I have been looking for a clean Excursion diesel but all you find are gas ones and there is no way I am getting a gas in that tank

I have a 99 F-250 with the 7.3L diesel that has 210K miles rough miles on her.
Still going strong. Only thing is I have 3 recalls on the fridge door for the past 5 years. I don't want to take the time to fix them. I do have some rattles and some thing starting to come apart. I broke the cover over the fuel filter, the rock guard things on the rear fenders are falling off, I had to change out the seats, the drivers side was worn slap out, the headliner is starting to come apart at the windshield, I changed the clutch at 175K miles and got a brake job at 195K, but she runs great. I pulled a cattle trailer a lot before Rita. Now I just pull a tractor and a boat now and then. I get about 19.5 mpg on every tank. My sisters exboyfriend had 800K miles on his and lost it for Ike. He was a hotshot driver. He changed several clutches and brake jobs. |
There are many of them 7.3L with 1 million plus miles on them running around. You can read about them on some of the webs diesel truck forums. That 7.3L is one heck of an engine.

It ain't as fast as the 6.0 and 6.4, it smokes a little more when you get on it and it makes a little more noise, but it is very dependable.
Wish the gov't would let them still manufacture them. There is a chiropractor in my neighborhood that has a nice very clean 4 X 4 with the 7.3 in it. Hardly any miles on her, she drives it to work and back, not much more. Waiting on him to put a for sale sign on her and I am all over it. It is 10 years old, but looks like she is brand spankin new. |
i have a 2000 super duty 286,000 runiing power program since 2001 change oil and transmission fluid and fuel filters other then that have never had a problem

I have a Banks chip and 4" stainless exhaust. It helps with exhaust temps. when pulling a heavy load.
I have a 6 speed manual. No tranny oil changes. I run a bypass filter system on my engine oil. No oil changes for that either. I just sample every 6 months and change the main filter every 6 months and the bypass filter every year. So far, so good. Been running that system for over 100K miles. I add a couple qts. of oil every time I change filters. My dad has a similar oil filter system. He had to change his oil one time in 100K miles so far. He had a high silicone content in his oil and the oil analysis company said it was from dust, he was using a cheap air filter. |
