Vermillion Bay 4-4
Well, my "better-half" and the in-laws decided to make a trip to marsh island for some quality family time on Easter Sunday. It turned out to be a great trip. Amanda caught her :D FIRST "bull red":D and we ended up catching about 25 solid fish.
The water in the bay is horrible but marsh island is not too bad in spots. Try to find some moving water near a deep channel but the key is to have cover near by (submerged grass, reeds, pilings...etc). Keep at it, the fish are there. I examined each stomach of the four fish we kept. Every one was completely empty with just a small bit of residue. The only thing I could make out in one was a piece of crab shell. The water temperatures will continue to rise and the bite will keep getting better.
Good Luck...

No, the first dam was so crowded, it looked like someone was giving away $100.00 bills. I heard the crabs are big and clean right now. We went through Oyster lake and worked the cuts before you get to the mound. It's an easy run and the wind doesn't bother ya.

Did you fish in oyster lake? I always catch them along the broken islands on the right. Throw spinnerbaits or manns mid minus 1 crank baits.

No, we fished between the lake and the mouth at the Mound.

Its almost 6 miles from the point to the game warden camp on the north end of the island. If you travel at a heading of 180 deg from the point.

Also make sure you have a boat that can handle V. Bays fury. It can go from dead calm to nasty in no time.

Never been inside the island. What kind if depths in there? Is it had to find your way. Any obstructions to worry about. Thinking about trying it this Saturday.

Depends on what part of the island, anywhere from 1-20 foot. If you have never been there before I would stay in bird island bayou.(canal by the game warden camp)

That would be the best thing to do. Bird Island Bayou is the best to start. Get a good map, GREAT depth finder, a slow idle, and patience. Once you learn it, it's a great place to be...:grinpimp:

Caution!!! If you are traveling through Bird Island Bayou there is plenty of dept the first few miles however there are some spots if you are traveling all of the way throught the island where it gets really shallow. I have been fishing the island in and out for the last 5 years and I still don't know 20% of it. Good advice is to explore when the tide is high (when the water is in the Marsh Grass) if you see the roots of the marsh grass be careful because the tide may be too low. Like they said make sure you have a depth finder. P.S. you can catch a lot of fish fishing the Marsh and the points on the outside of the island and there is less chance of getting stuck.

Opinions has a very good point. I have to tell ya, I've got a 20' xpress with a 98"beam so I don't draft much water, so if you draft much more than 12" you might want to take your time and explore on high tide.
(Needed to vent)
Oh, and if anyone is running through Marsh Island....please be respectful of others. I ALWAYS come off step when I meet someone on the bayou. I watch a family of 4 almost get thrown out of their boat by some A$$hole that didn't even let up. Bird Island Bayou is 75 yds wide on average....Use your head!!! :pissed:
