rockefeller refuge fishing

I was thinking about going to rockefeller refuge, putting in at joseph's harbor. I have never been there so I was looking for any input. Is it worth the drive are not. If so where is a good spot to try there. I'm going for reds, specks, flounder, crabs I'm not picky. thinking about going there Saturday since the wind will be so bad in the lake.

all star rod 03-25-2010 06:38 PM

Better than putting in at the Roll-Over......I fished there once in my life down the famous "Bertrand Canal" never going back again.....

Good Luck.

Hebert 03-25-2010 06:41 PM

whats was wrong with roll-over/bertrand canal? so i don't make the mistake of going too lol

all star rod 03-25-2010 06:45 PM

I would not back down Roll-Over with a larger boat over 20'.....you could lose the axle on your trailer. Overall, if you fish Big Lake, Dularge, and other area like that and venture down there, you will have a rude awaking...:D LIVE BAIT IS A MUST!!! Good Luck!;)

shellman 03-25-2010 07:53 PM

Rollover for smaller boats....but @ times you can catch some reds...

huntin fool 03-25-2010 07:56 PM

contact Speckdaddy, he used to fish that place non stop

Montauk17 03-25-2010 08:51 PM

Rockefeller has some good marsh ponds and canals to the east of where most people fish. I fish out there a few times a year and tear up the reds. Only problem is it gets very shallow in some spots.

Asterisk-Rich 03-25-2010 09:11 PM

rollover is right across the street from where we hunt...i see people catching reds off the side of the road right there all the time

Not true. I fish there often and never have needed to use live bait. Spinnerbaits and gulp are deadly ther on reds much like they are at any other place. You just have to find the fish.

Again I was only unlucky enough to fish this great area once. My comment on the live bait was because 99% of the people we saw fishing there was using it. We used plastics and caught a few fish.....

I have no problem with you giving advice without any facts as long as you let them know that you have no idea what you're talking about.

specksNdaSURF 03-26-2010 11:11 AM

gulps tipped with dead shrimp has worked for me although i haven't fish it in a few years

specktator 03-26-2010 11:51 AM

Launch your boat at joseph's harbor. Head to the "t". Take a right an go all te way down till it dead ends by warden camps. Work that bank and point by camps with gulp white 3" shrimpand tip with market shrimp if u want. Also heard they are smokin em at the LSU weir.

Asterisk-Rich 03-26-2010 12:09 PM

i thought it was going to get interesting for a second

goldenrod 03-26-2010 12:28 PM

If you are the fish expert there well good for you. Trust me, you do not have to worry about me potlicking your hot spot at that OXIDATION POND. As stated, been there once and never going back. I made a comment about live bait there being the ticket. BTW, I was told this from a few people that fish that area a lot. You acted like I attacked you or said something towards you in a negative way. I know you have an issue with me becasue of my comments in the sports section; however, I could care less!:D

Specktator, you mentioned live bait "market swrimps" so you better watch out ducktricker may try to call you out. Well come to think of it, since you are an LSU fan he will give you a pass.....:*****::*****:If I were only that luck....:*****:

specktator 03-26-2010 12:58 PM

lmao! i havent been out there in 2 or 3 years but we used to wear the reds out over there. i used dead swimps a few times but most of time all u need is gulps!

Dink 03-26-2010 01:06 PM

Read all the regs before you go......wlf don't mess around out there!

all star rod 03-26-2010 01:09 PM

Dink, good point...... For example, I do not think you can leave until day light.

They want to make sure your boat does not get damaged by all those TURDS floating in the water!!:*****::*****:J/K.....:D

Dink 03-26-2010 01:18 PM

I went to first weir one day, in boat, and then some fella drives up in his Tahoe!!!! He pulled out 8 crab traps, not nets, im talking commercial looking crab traps, and baited them......before he could get the 3rd one in there wlf showed up.......he could have filled one of them traps with all the tickets he got......I laughed all day....

Ducktrickster 03-26-2010 01:39 PM

Get over yourself ASR.

Back to the topic. I agree with Spectator. Go to that area with a grub and if the water is good and there is bait, you will catch. There are many other areas just look around for the previously mentioned conditions and you should have a good day on the water. If you have any questions pm me.

Dead or live.....Majority of the time once you hook the live stuff it is dead with a few minutes of fishing anyway:D

Asterisk-Rich 03-26-2010 02:53 PM

bam

scatv 03-26-2010 03:14 PM

I have fished Joseph Harbor for years. Tear up some reds, crabs, shrimp, gar and specs. Like anywhere else the conditions have to be right. BTW Charlie did you get some pizza today?

goldenrod 03-26-2010 03:48 PM

if you r a true fisherman you should be able to catch fish on any body of water. just my opinion.

No pizza, I think they may have had that at the district workshop. Next time send it directly to my office.:grinpimp:

Or catch consistently. Maybe not every trip out. Hell when I bought my boat 5 trips produces 2 trout and 1 flounder at big lake. I should have quit and badmouthed that place after the first trip.:*****:

Country Boy 03-26-2010 04:47 PM

a guy i work with went out there last weekend and caught a limit of big crabs but no fish.

Is it October YET? 03-26-2010 05:29 PM

:*****:Seems according to "MR BERTRAND CANAL" you can say "use live/dead bait" only if you are an LSU fan but if you are not an LSU fan well........!

Asterisk-Rich 03-26-2010 10:16 PM

I'm an LSU fan but I don't use live bait, where do i fit in?

:*****:You are in like Flint since you are an LSU fan and do not use live/dead bait.......From what I gathered, if you are an LSU fan and use live bait you get a free pass from MR BERTRAND CANAL. However, since I am not an LSU fan and I do not use live bait but I mention that you should use live bait you are on his hit list.....Just think if I used live bait not being an LSU fan!:D Mr Bertrand Canal would have a field day on me!:grinpimp:

The sad thing is, Mr Bertrand Canal tried to call me out just because of my past comments in the sports bar.....he knows it and I know it but I could give a RATS AZZ!

Could have fooled me. Seriously, sorry for disagreeing with you on an opinion...not facts...driven forum. I didn't mean for you to have a nervous breakdown.

Look at the bright side buddy, you have new material to use for the next year.
