new pup

i jus got a new 3 month old lab last week. the only problem im havin so far is she hates the kennel. she barks constantly when in the kennel so i get no sleep. what advice or tricks do u guys use? thanks.

Dink 02-14-2010 06:31 PM

Put a towel over it, she wont know your there so she wont bark.....

fishinpox 02-14-2010 06:35 PM

like dink said put a towel or bed sheet over it , when it barks dont even look at it just ignore it , also buy it a comfortable dog bed and some chew toys put them in the crate with the puppy , never use the crate as punishment so dont yell at the puppy for barking in the cage if you ignore it , it will stop maybe not tonite but give it a week . the cage should be the dogs "comfort / saftey zone" or simply its personal space , my dogs go take naps in their crates or go in there just to chew a bone ect... mine used to hate it when they were pups

your scent is on the clothes, seems like that would work ;)

If you want to use the term kennel for your pup ,DO NOT scold the pup while inside the crate. Like the others said , Do use the sheet over the crate to hide the pup from view. Once the pup feels that the crate is a safe zone and not that he / she is being punished , You will have no problem getting pup to kennel on his / her own without all the drama.

If you can get a towel from the owners where you got it with the puppies mothers scent on it, that usually helps too.

ok

thanks guys for the help. its workin a little bit but she still tends to bark about half way through the nite. i know she doesnt have to go pee because thats what i first thought. i guess she jus has to get used to it. at least im sleeping halfway throught the night now. lol

specktator 02-18-2010 11:01 PM

Pretty much impossible to keep them from howling all night when they pups. I never seen a lab pup that didn't howl when u put him in kennel at night and not crap all over the place! It will get better, just takes time.

wtretrievers 02-18-2010 11:04 PM

You sometimes take their kennel with a towel over it & set it on top of the dryer & turn it on & they'll go out like a light;)

PUREBAY2200 02-18-2010 11:25 PM

Mine was the same at first... After 2 weeks she loved it.
Naps in it, takes her toys into it etc. It's her safety zone. Sometimes she won't get out if she real comfy. If I can't find her in the house I just look in her kennel. Lol
last week while on vacation she stayed with my brother.
I took her over today and when she got tired she went to the exact spot where her kennel was and laid down... Priceless!!

Every time you leave your house and when you cant watch her put her in the kennel. It seems basic but you wont believe how fast it will work. I did it with my lab that still to some extent has separation anxiety. after about a week the howling and excessant barking quit. I also decided to feed her in the kennel so I could monitor how much she eats because we have another lab in the house that will eat as much as she can at the drop of a hat. but the more you can put her in there and make it not seem bad the faster she will acclimate to it.

simplepeddler 02-19-2010 12:57 PM

also, make sure no one tries to play with her while she is in the kennel..........no kids poking fingers in there ans such.............

we've been experincing the same thing until last night. We've had an exciting battle to say the least with ours. He's been in our home for about a week catches parvo and yesterday was his first day back in 3 days. I tell you what you don't realize how attached you get to them until something like that happens. Anyway he was crying for the 1st 3 or 4 days that we had him. I would just wake up and yell really loud at him to hush and he was finally got the hint. Now last night we didn't hear so much as a whimper out of him but he was confined to a just a kennel for 3 days so im sure he was just happy to be home. Good luck

simplepeddler 02-23-2010 02:39 PM

good luck with him Cajun! that will rock your socks

cajunforeman 02-23-2010 05:09 PM

Thanks..... He seems to be doing great now. The only thing that worries me is the vet said not to work him for 2 weeks. I've already missed alot of valuable time with him since he was 3 months when i got him. He was doin really well with his training before all this came about.

Trust me Go Fish keep a close watch on where you bring your dog. I wouldn't wish that sickness upon no one.

dont rush the training a many of dogs have been trained after the age of 1 and even 2, just dont rush it you'll have plenty of time

PUREBAY2200 02-24-2010 12:05 PM

What exactly is parvo??

cajunforeman 02-24-2010 12:44 PM

parvo is a disease that attacks their digestive systems. Dogs that over the age of 1 year are normally immune to it if they have all their shots. The dog will start throwing up and have a loss of appetite and lack of energy. Normally it stays dormant for 3 to 7 days then they will start showing signs of it. It is highly contagious disease that is normally spread through the fecies of dogs. It is most common in dobermans, labs and rotweillers.
