Big Lake Wiers are easy limits but fustrating

Ok, First of all. Let me start out by saying , This was my first time ever to B/L. we went to the 3rd weir South of Hebert's. It has a small pass thru for boats in the center. Ive heard ALL the horror stories about the congestion at the wiers on the weekends.. Well, its not that bad..Its WORSE! :eek:This is complete insanity. Some people should not be allowed to own a boat! . They have the attitude that if the boat can fit, they can anchor there! We already had 3 boats fishing the same spot (middle canal about 50ft from weir), then 2 boats come thru and we had to pull our lines in, thinking they are just passing thru the weir opening. WRONG, they both stop in the middle and throw titantic anchors over! Are you kidding me! :pissed: Thank God we only need 1 more to limit out, Which my daughter already had on her line come to find out, so we got him in the icechest and got the heck out of there, ! I will NEVER go back on a weekend. I suggest if you have a temper, stay away by all means!

I know this is a report section for fishing results, but I feel the fishing experience is part of the report. Now that I got that off my chest, the fishing was plentiful. Went saturday and limited out (me/wife) in about 1 1/2 hrs. Went bk Sunday and limited out again (me/wife/daughter) about 2 hrs! So 25 reds for the wkend :) We caught them on dead shrimp on 1/4 jig.

Im sry.. Looking at map. I believe it was the 3rd wier South of Heberts. It has a small openeing for boats to pass thru...

My uncle was out there on Saturday. They got a limit but said there were tons of boats fishing illegally, too close to wier.

But they keep people off the lake and it's awsome for us lol

It's really crazy because In

December Chris and I
Cleaned 575 Redfish for customers
And 670 in January and maybe 30 were caught at weirs and that was mid week with high winds only reason we fished them and had to ourself

If people would spend a little time and learn that weirs are not only place that hold fish .

mallard matt 02-20-2017 04:20 PM

Ive seen people draw down with pistols on each other at the wiers before.

Pull n Pray 02-20-2017 04:45 PM

If you go to the weirs you have to throw all fishing etiquette out the door. Its the Royal Rumble of red fishing. Its the price you pay for easy fishing.

alexm 02-20-2017 07:10 PM

Any size to your catch? I haven't heard of much beyond barely legal coming out of the lake lately.

Kind of like boat ramp at 5:30am on Saturday in June

marty f 02-20-2017 10:02 PM

Heard there were ALOT guides in there........ sad

I have only fished weirs 3 times ever , 2 out of the 3 the guides were there doing EXACTLY what the OP described, ridding right up in the center and staking their claim, or doing the swap out with another guide.......... pretty sad when these "guides" have to fish the weirs

Withe the exception of W and one or two other guides , I have little respect for the big lake guides.

There is a big difference between a Guide and some guy with a boat, some rods and reels and a U.S.C.G 6-pack. ;)

Southern Sportsman 02-21-2017 08:31 AM

You Said it do not go if you have a temper !!!!!! Most times easy fishing, its good when you are struggling on the lake or have kids or people that don't fish often cause its easy

You are 1000000000000% right

Hit nail on the head !!!

never should a guide have customers involved in that cluster ever ..

Anyone know what the penalty is for violating the 250' rule?

I haven't been there enough to see whether or not that's even enforced at all.

They will write you a ticket not sure how much it will cost you though. When it gets too out of hand they will have undercover guys out there so just because you don't see a game warden doesn't mean there isn't one there.

"W" 02-21-2017 02:51 PM

Fine is $250 per person 1st offense

They hammered em in January one day , wrote a pile of tickets and was told 70% of the tickets wrote were from Out of state

Yeah, nothing really big. Caught a LOT just over 16". Threw a ton of those back. We decided on only keeping at least 17". Out of 25 fish for the 2 days, most of them were 17-19". We had two 20" and one 22".

Not sure how to post pics...

Well the 2 boats that came park right in the middle in front of us were both from Texas. We could overhear them talking. One of them was surely closer than 50' to weir

I think it's 125 feet, actually. The signs state something along the lines of "No activities except for boat passage, next 250 feet." That would be 125 feet on either side of the weir = 250 feet total.

I'm pretty sure as long as you're not between the sign and the weir, you're OK.

And at $250/person, that's some seriously expensive redfish.

"W" 02-21-2017 04:08 PM

If people only knew the concept for why they have a 250ft barrier .
This is for safety.

It's going to take 1 boat anchored in middle of channel illegally and a father with his young kids will be coming through the weirs with a strong tide and run into a boat anchored illegal .

Consequences will be tragic and over a trashy red Drum could cost a person a life or child .

Let that sink in

They're not the most sought after fish on big lake ranked 3rd for most anglers
And yes we catch them and keep them but not going to put someone's life in danger over them when I can catch at will along a bank

I go behind the Weirs often, but not to fish at the weirs. It amazes me that folks will subject themselves to the Sh$# show at the weirs when within a short distance from them are beautiful grassy flats with clear water and often schooling fish.

Have to be opened mined ...
Lot are just narrow minded and look no farther than that .. I've heard guys at the landing talk about how there day sucked and was ruined because they scratched at every weir.

Had one guy tell me , man this sucked never could get a spot at the weirs and I waisted 2 hours driving here to come back with zero .

We told him did you try anywhere else ? He said no
I said if you would of just tried 100 yards down the banks you could of caught all the reds your arms could stand .

He said man I didn't think they would be on the banks

10 years ago, the fine was $225 per person...... surprised the fine only went up to $ 250.

Mr T 02-22-2017 02:03 PM

LOL combine the harbor scene from Jaws with the bar scene from Star Wars and you get a pretty good picture of what goes on out there.

MEM1971 02-23-2017 12:36 PM

Quit fishing weirs years a go for this reason. And your right just because u don't see them don't mean they not there. I been checked one time on the lake and that was last year. I have been checked a dozen times behind weirs. Once I think he just knew he had me. I caught my limit of reds fairly quick then caught and released a few more and all of sudden the big trout made a run. After 7-8 trout caught and thrown in ice chest there he came. Checked all over that boat. I was thinking he couldn't see exactly wat kind of fish I was catching and thought I was over limit on reds. Never pays to break the rules!

Banks, points, drains, reefs, cuts, rocks and my beloved flats. Redfish like all kind of terrain and with as many as there are in our estuaries you can usually find them on most of the above on any given day.
