hurt dog

just got in from working my lab and he wouldnt sit or jump like normal. Noticed a hard lump behind what I would call his elbow on his rear leg. Its definitely not on the other leg and when i push on him to sit( force him) he lays on the opposite leg as to take the weight of the other one. Tuesday when I was working him he hit a hole and barrel rolled a coupletimes but after that never acted different. then yesterday didnt work him but let him out and he didnt act different. today he wouldnt sit but would run and retrieve if i didnt make him sit. When I forced him to sit and sent him to retrieve he would slowly get up then run and retrieve. any ideas? pulled muscle? banged up and bruised? if he's doing it friday I'll bring him by the vet I guess.

huntin fool 01-06-2010 09:17 PM

this aint good..

Finfeatherfur 01-06-2010 09:52 PM

I hope I am not correct, but it sounds like a torn or ruptured ACL. Consult a vet immediatley for x-rays and diagnosis. Surgery is an option if that is the diagnosis, but it's expensive.

Raymond 01-06-2010 09:58 PM

PM me if you need any major work done.

Ray 01-06-2010 10:14 PM

Feel it to see if it is soft or hard.
If it is soft, it may not be bad.
If it is a hard lump, that is not good.

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:16 PM

where hes got the lump

Sorry I had to..........i hope nothing is seriously wrong with your dog

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:24 PM

i can squeeze it but it is hard, not hard like a bone though, after hunting friday I'll bring him to the vet if he's not looking better by tommorrow afternoon

Ray 01-06-2010 10:32 PM

Both my last 2 labs had some kind of fatty tumor on their hind leg around the joint.
It was not maglinent, just removed and sewed up.

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:32 PM

oh and im definitely not hunting him fyi

Finfeatherfur 01-06-2010 10:33 PM

Shawn, I don't want to scare you, but I would not hunt that dog. I would not let him do ANYTHING! I would crate him up, give him some Ibuprofen and get him to a vet. If it is a tear, do not let him run or "spring" for anything.

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:34 PM

this isn't fatty ray if thats what your talking about feels hard like a muscle

Finfeatherfur 01-06-2010 10:34 PM

Oh ok, now I understand!

Ray 01-06-2010 10:34 PM

That ain't good.

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:35 PM

I'll see if i can get a buddy to get him to the vet tommorrow then I'll be at work till 11:30pm.

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 10:37 PM

yeah

Shawn Braquet 01-06-2010 11:02 PM

man I hate this, can't imagine what im gonna feel like when my sons sick for the first time, this is makeing me a mess

speck-chaser 01-06-2010 11:53 PM

yeah,my old lab has some of those fatty tumors. The vet said not to really worry about em.but that sounds like something that should be taken a look at.

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 10:28 AM

vet said he has a tear in the muscle belly in his hamstring if that makes since. Said it reminded him of Joe Namath. They are supposed to try and line something up with LSU for me to bring him there and they try and do surgery on him.

speck-chaser 01-07-2010 10:47 AM

get ready to bend over. Ask for k.y. it helps some.

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 06:27 PM

well dog's going to have surgery in the morning keep your fingers crossed because i know I will. And he's not going to LSU, would have had to hire a divorice lawyer after paying that much to get Drake fixed with at best a fifty fifty chance of making a full recovery.

huntin fool 01-07-2010 06:28 PM

This is a serious matter...but ya gotta joke..

Good luck bud, hope Drake makes it thru, he has plenty more seasons to come!!!

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 06:34 PM

your probably right was locked up pretty tight on it the night before

Raymond 01-07-2010 08:18 PM

Here goes guys; In 2006 my dog had the time of his life, hunting from North Dakota to Lubbock Tx with a friend that has a guiding operation.
He came down with kennel cough in july and I fought it until August but, one night Harley would not take his meds wrapped in peanut butter. After several trips to the local vet and $$$$$$$$$$$$ I was sent to LC and University animal clinic. I took the family to see him friday before labor day because in my heart I knew that was the last time my boys would see him. Dr Loftin would call with updates on a regular basis but, there was never any improvement. The Tuesday after labor day Harley died and it was Dr Loftin who gave us the news. He had been with him all night and was as torn up as we were. His last words were,"Thank You for giving him a chance". Moral to the story; don't get any animal if you can't be there for them when the chips are down.:(

Get your dog fixed Shawn and don't listen to the BS on this site!!!!!
If you need money, let me know, Iam good for a couple $$.

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 08:36 PM

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 08:39 PM

i just couldn't justify LSU to the wife is what I was saying and dont blame her when I can bring him to someone who sounds qualified locally and have the same risk

My dog T-Neg died while in the care of Univ. Animal Clinic of an incurable
inherited disease, unexpectedly. They didn't charge me a cent and they
also sent some money to a dog disease research fund in his name and sent
us a plaque about the donation in his name.
He was there for boarding between Christmas and New Years while I was
offshore and my wife was at her mom's in North La.
If he would have died while at home and I was at work, I don't know what
my wife would have done. She was very attached to that animal.
They are some great people at Univ. Animal Clinic.
They all knew my dog by name and always make me and him both feel very
welcome when we came in. They did everything they could to help him,
including surgery disposing of him and we didn't get any bill.

Several people up the road who do not take any care of their dogs up the road. its pathetic :pissed::pissed::pissed:

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 08:59 PM

I always had an uncle and his lab was his "hunting dog" and nothing else...stayed in the kennel, worked it, then back to the kennel. I just don't believe that's how you treat an animal, I don't think that my wife would argue that I spend an equal amount of time with my dog than I do with her. Truely mans best friend.

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 09:08 PM

my uncles only left the kennel to hunt or train, and I just don't feel that you get that trust and bond from a dog like that. Now don't get me wrong there's play time and work time and he knows the difference. But he enjoys both too.

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 09:11 PM

What I don't like is the guys that leave scars after force fetching a dog from vice grips or other means. There is a trainer in texas that my supervisor uses and his dog has scars from force fetching, I just can't see you needing that much force of course im no professional trainer either.

Ray 01-07-2010 09:22 PM

All it takes is a pinch to the ear or lip to make the dog pay attention. Not vice grips.

huntin fool 01-07-2010 09:26 PM

Vice grips? Like a VICE?????

Ray 01-07-2010 09:28 PM

Like pliers. Never heard of that.
I have seen a friend use a pinch collar turned upside down.
He pinched the ear against the prong. That is bad enough.
There are other ways to get a dogs attention. It don't take
pliers.

what do they grip!? the nads??? OH heck no. There is twenty million other ways to get a dogs attention than that

Shawn Braquet 01-07-2010 10:12 PM

clamp the pliers on the ears is how this guy does it that im talking about

Shawn Braquet 01-08-2010 09:51 AM

dog did not have surgery, Dr. Loftin said the knot was a swollen lymph node. He gave drake antibiotics and we are going to watch him for a week and hope the swelling goes down.

Finfeatherfur 01-08-2010 09:58 AM

C O O L! - Are you jumping up and down?

longsidelandry 01-08-2010 10:06 AM

Ray 01-08-2010 12:40 PM

Dr. Loftin is a fantastic vet. I just hate his smart azz attitude.

SoggyRedNeck 01-08-2010 12:49 PM

My lab was 9 months old and she started limping around on her hind leg. I brushed it off for a few days and went to the vet after nothing improved. He almost had me convinced that she had broken her leg and would need surgery. THen i paid 70 bucks for an x-ray that showed nothing. some kind of growing pain caused her to limp, a simple shot fixed her right up.

It will scare the crap out of you when you dont know what it is and makes it even worse when the vet is negative and gets you to believe the worst.

Shawn Braquet 01-08-2010 03:20 PM

agreed

I didn't get any attitude from him.

Ray 01-08-2010 05:33 PM

He just has a terrible personality. I do love his work though. I wouldn't bring my dogs
anywhere else.
If you don't understand what he says when he gives you a diagnosis using medical
language, he gives me the feeling that he thinks I am a dubaz for not understanding.

All I want from him is to tell me in terms any normal Coonass can understand.

Dr. Geokle is just as good, but has better attitude.

Gerald 01-08-2010 06:52 PM

Great news

My wife's cat had surgery last week to remove a growth in the Colen.

Found out yesterday, it was not a tumor. The cat came home this afternoon. He will go back to the Vet Monday for another checkup and to remove stiches.

We/she has not gotten the bill yet. What does a 9 day stay and major surgery and medications cost? Do we need to get a lone from the Bank?

The good news is that the cat is 11 years old and has never needed anything but annual checkups.

Ray 01-08-2010 06:56 PM

Glad to hear Gerald.
