About to start

Ok guys, after the hunt yesterday with R Little, I got to thinking about buying a few calls on the drive from LC to my house. Whats a good starter call ? One to get me started learning the basics... I wanna eventually get to where i can call pintail, specks and mallards like R Little and Capt D can.... Fill me in on some information. Im not looking to spend $1,000 on calls... just a starter call, and then i'll move up from there..

longsidelandry 01-04-2010 11:16 AM

You can buy some that come with instructional cd's or dvd's, I would get something like that to start with.

Jordan 01-04-2010 11:34 AM

yeah, think im gonna do that and drive down the road blowing my call with the CD on !!! think it would sound good on my system ross ?? hahaha

longsidelandry 01-04-2010 11:35 AM

lol Man I don't know how much bass they have on those CD's

Jordan 01-04-2010 11:40 AM

imma find out !!!

SULPHITE 01-04-2010 11:47 AM

Haydel DR 85

Ray 01-04-2010 11:55 AM

Haydel is one of the best, most durable duck calls. Them and Faulks have some
good instructional info.
In my opinion, the wood and cane calls sound better, but the water, moisture and
spit will affect it's sound after a while.

adamsfence 01-04-2010 12:03 PM

you tube also has some good instructional videos i use them alot

"W" 01-04-2010 12:29 PM

a game caller with a mallard tape....get the tape with a 1000 mallards on the water quacking....... Try that out and report back

Jordan 01-04-2010 12:33 PM

will do.... im gonna make it my goal, to get pretty good at duck calling, i dont like just "riding along and shooting" i wanna do a little of the work when im on a duck hunt. Im not fortunate enough to have a ducks lease, and all we have up here are wood ducks, and they dont come to a call or cup to a decoy spread. So if the chance ever arises for me to go on another hunt, i'll have the duck calling under my belt. Thanks for the ideas and opinions guys !

Raymond 01-04-2010 12:33 PM

I have a shoe box ful of calls Jordan you can take your pic of.;)
Let me know when you will be in LC next and I will Hook a BROTHER UP.

Jordan 01-04-2010 12:42 PM

Robert, i appreciate the offer, but i dont want to be a welcher. This is all new to me and i want to try and learn things on my own. I want to buy my own calls. If i get in a bind i'll let you know...Also, I want to listen to people who've been doing it their whole lives, and i want people to hollar at me when i do things wrong... Its going to take time, but im working on a dream !!! Its my dream to be good at calling and shooting. I got the shooting down pretty good, im still a young pup kinda in a way, because i get too excited and try to shoot 20 birds with 3 shots... You did teach me something good, pick a bird, kill it and pick another bird... I APPRECIATE THE INFORMATION and guys, if ya'll see anything that needs to be pitchen in about waterfolw hunting, do so... i always listen !!!

specktator 01-04-2010 04:04 PM

DR 85 is definitely the best cheap call to start with. I have a $100 mallard call next to my DR 85 but still the 85 is the first one I draw. It's $25

Wag 01-04-2010 04:20 PM

Haydel all the way .... DR 85 and for specks Haydel S81,

Very easy call to blow. Also, look the the Primos high roller call. It is good for Pintal, Mallard Drake, and green wing teal. It sells for $ 15-20.
I have the Dirty rice and red leg calls by Haydel. Both are inexpensive and easy to use.

huntin fool 01-04-2010 04:29 PM

Just get the zink ph2 polycarb that comes with a dvd...I'll give you my dvd. Better than a Haydel hands down.

Its like 25 bucks with dvd and call, Just buy the call and i'll give you the dvd.

Fixed it for ya.;)
Agree with Haydel's, stay away from DC calls(not for the beginner),don't need any highend calls yet(RNT,ect). Would start with a double reed (dr85) and learn to hit the notes perfect before gradatin.
All my calls have baca juce inem, that's how I gettem to purrrrr like I do.:D
Don't even think about a Chein Caille yet!!!!!

huntin fool 01-04-2010 04:31 PM

Mallard call- zink ph2 polycarb
Speck call-haydel compinsator

specktator 01-04-2010 04:32 PM

Haha yeh chien caille gonna take u a while. My buddy was trying to blow mine at the camp all weekend! He sounded like a Yorkshire terrier! Lol

Ray 01-04-2010 04:33 PM

Listen to the DVD, blow a little, then go to the country and call some yard ducks
from a place that they can not see you.
Wild ducks do not sound nothing like the DVD's. Some sound high pitched and raspy,
some sound low pitched and clean.
Learn to toot a whistle too. Grays, Pintail, Teal and Widgeon work good with a whistle
too.

SULPHITE 01-04-2010 04:38 PM

I've got an orange colored haydel speck call...sounds like a specklebelly with the craps when I try to use it.

Dude get the feeding mallard tape and let it rip........

There are lots of opinions on calls and callers, here is my 2c: I use the Haydel VTM 90 which is basically a DR-85 with a hole in the barrel. My buddy who was is a trumpet player in high school has great breath control. He uses a Yentzen Mod 500 (made in Grooves, Texas) and he can hypnotize the greenheads. I never could master the Yentzen, it's not for beginners. I would suggest getting a good whistle, I like Haydels MP-90. I can't make it sing like Ron and Eli can, but you are not very likely to flare ducks with a whistle while you are learning. Lastly, get a teal call ,BT-85, is what I use. It's not the easiest call to blow but the first time you turn a bunch of teal you'll be hooked. You can get so involved in the calling that you you're late on the shooting part. Welcome to your latest passion! http://www.haydels.com has some good audio tips on calling. I'll admit that I am not very good at spec calling. My buds that are addicts use a Redbone spec call and stuffer decoys. http://www.redbonecalls.com These are extravagantly expensive but they are the ultimate. It's worthwhile to visit their website. Even Nate Wright admits that the key to consistently killing specs is location, location, location. It doesn't matter how good you are at calling if they aren't using the field, your results will be spotty at best. Get some yourself some calls, practice, and enjoy.

SULPHITE 01-04-2010 05:48 PM

redbones are sweet...but $$$

Agreed....Try the Primos speck call to get you started, then treat yourself to a redbone....Dr-85 haydel can't be beat for cost & productivity!!!;)

Jordan 01-04-2010 07:42 PM

Keep in mind guys, I'm just starting. Don't wanna spend $60/call

specktator 01-04-2010 07:46 PM

Tell u what my buddy bought faulks speck call the other day it was $12. It is the easiest speck call I ever blown check it out!

SULPHITE 01-04-2010 08:00 PM

Yeh it sounds great! My buddy bought one. He said he got it from Lafayette Shooters. Only reason he bought it was it was only speck call they had. It really does sound good though. It is very easy to get to break. He was the one I said sounded like a yorkie! He hasn't quite got it! But if u are having trouble gettin your speck call to break, check it out very easy to blow! I actually gave one of my other buddies a few tips on how to blow it and by the end of the night he sounded decent! He is a good duck caller though!

Raymond 01-04-2010 08:18 PM

Hey man, Pleeeeeeeeeese don't come out of the house with a Mr T starter set!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One duck call and one whistle for now and D and I will probably make you keep them in your pocket. Don't want them things to get cold, really affects the sound quality.;) Meet me at the LAKE front around 10'ish Friday night and we can practice.:D

Jordan 01-04-2010 08:20 PM

I haven't set lips on any call except a wood duck call. I'm gonna make that my goal before next duck season.

Just gave jordan a nice lil pep talk about calling...By no means do i consider my self REALLLT REALLY good. But i can hold my own when it comes to calling (especially now). Told him hes just going to have to spend the summer cranking up on it, and practicing.

specktator 01-04-2010 08:33 PM

Keep the calls in your truck! Best way to learn! That's how I did it just blow them while u riding gives u something to do!

Fixed it for ya, you have been hanging around the "Midget" too much.
What have you done recently to improve your calling?

Aint really done much "recently" I just called all summer and watched a many of people call, and picked up on there habbits I've just been calling on my hunts, finally felt i was decent enough to call with other people...

Started getting the "squeal" down at the end of my call, which i love dat.

Behonest with yall though, i can't stand my dr 85. I promise once you get a zink Ph2 you will never want another call again.

Raymond 01-04-2010 08:55 PM

Good, can't get better if you don't practice, all the time. Save your $$$$$$$$$ and buy a RNT short barrel or original. Then chunk the compensator and buy a Chien Caille and learn how to call specks.:smokin:

I like my zink ph2 too fool...I use it about 70% of the time...It will lock up sometimes on me though...but it sounds nasty, duck nasty!

Only time mine locks up, is when it gets litterally DUNKED in water, couple of "dut dut dut" like a feeder call and shes back to sounds NASTY.

Jordan 01-04-2010 09:37 PM

I got me a few getting made right now, as starter calls, then I'll upgrade when I get a little better at it. Imma be the next duck commander. Watch out Phil Robinson, I'm coming for ya buddy ! Lmao, thanks guys for the talks and guiding me in the right direction, I should have the calls by this weekend ?!?! Callmaker is working on them ! Thanks again callmaker !

Shawn Braquet 01-05-2010 12:42 AM

I have a echo that I like not sure of the model, fools heard it, maybe its horrible though but seems to work so far, but still quite fond of my whistle still a believer that it'll do a lot more than most mallard calls especially late in the season. Got a chien caille this year and working to perfect that but still have a lot of work to do with that. I don't know anyone that can blow a speck call good to listen to but oneday I'll get that down.

Jordan 01-05-2010 08:02 AM

Deadly D and R Little. Pm. 'Em on the speck calls

Red Devil 01-05-2010 08:32 AM

Chien Caille takes alot of work and practice. I've bought the haydels and the primos and have always gone back to the chien Caille. I just need more practice being since I don't get to use it much. My give it a shot this weekend if the field is open.
