Rattlesnake

Saw this guy on the way home from work this evening. About 5' with about 10 rattlers. Beautiful snake and looked very healthy. Glad he was calm enough to let me get a few pics before turning and going into the grass.

Yea..... $¥€# that!

beautiful snake-----as long as it's through YOUR lens!

He was chillin. I didn't realize it was a rattlesnake until I was passing him. I had to back up to him to take pics. He didn't seem to mind a bit. Haven't seen one around here in several years so I was excited. It was also the first time my wife had ever seen one that wasn't in a zoo aquarium. We see all kinds of critters on that road going home but it was our first rattlesnake.

I'm afraid it wouldn't have seen another morning if it was me.

Very cool snake. Markings are very vivid. I would love to see one like that from a short distance. I came across a good sized rat snake a few days ago and got to handle it for a bit to show my oldest daughter. Attachment 95253Attachment 95254
I am trying to teach my kids to respect them and not fear them indiscriminately. |

I find it interesting that there is something hard wired into us (or at least me) that is an involuntary draw back when a snake strikes. Even one I know 100% is non venomous and not a threat. I have been struck at or bitten by non venomous snakes in catching them quickly but still have a hard time making myself stay steady when one strikes at me. In our subconscious I guess we are programmed to see all snakes as threats and avoid them.
And I agree about poisonous snakes in my yard. Still have to protect first and educate second. |

I've worked hard to instill the same in my daughter. She like to catch snakes, but knows that I have to inspect them first. Even with venomous snakes, spiders etc. I try to teach her the difference between prudent and respectful caution and irrational fear. |

My boa had a habit of getting out of her aquarium. She would be loose in the house for a week or two sometimes then show back up. Came home fro work one day and she was coiled up sleeping on top of our bathroom door. 6' snake sleeping on top of a door 1 1/2" wide. I still haven't figured out how she could do that or how the hell she got up there.

Snakes creep me out, only reptile on earth that does. We worked on our lease last weekend and didn't come across not even a cottonmouth in the basin. Went back to the camp to pick up Sunday afternoon and a 6-7ft egg/rat snake came out of no where on our slab by the camp door, I was actually calm about, but it kept trying to go under the camp, I had a briar hook trying to scoop it up and go throw it in the woods a few 100 yds away, well it kept striking at me after bout 5 minutes I had enough so I killed it. I know that's a good snake to have around but done found 2 in my camp last year and didn't want my wife and kids to meet up with that next time they come for the weekend. Sorry snake guys....

Good to see a snake pic with its head still intact. I can see killing a venemous snake if it is around the house, but out in the woods, if it is venemous or not, respect them and let them go on their way....
