First time going offshore - Tips/advice?

Just got word today that someone backed out on some buddies on a tuna trip on the 20th. So I'm filling his spot. Not sure the charter name yet but will find out. Going out of Venice. And they have beer. That's all I know.

Thoughts?

Have different ways to counter sea sickness even if you haven't had it before.

Take a nap on the ride out.

Pack food that won't make you hurl.

Most captains don't like spray sunscreen on their boats.

mriguy 03-03-2015 05:03 PM

Don't get too drunk the night before

External battery pack for your smart phone so you can take pics and vids all day long.

Make sure you turn your phone on airplane mode, it dies quickly trying to constantly find signal.

I like to bring my own plugs and hard baits. Good charters have them but it helps if you have your own.

No BANANAS!!!

Pretty much any captain is good down there, but some are better than others. they have been doing well when the weather lets em get out. March/April are some good months to fish, but the wind is a biotch

meaux fishing 03-03-2015 06:13 PM

take some ginger pills the the day before and the day of, or eat candied ginger. Helps with seasickness they say. Dont stare down at the waves, keep looking out at the horizon

Mako19 03-03-2015 08:20 PM

Seriously, no matter what anyone else in your group says or does.

DO NOT GET DRUNK THE NIGHT BEFORE OR DURING THE TRIP UNTIL THE RIDE IN!

You are paying too much money to get sick at the first stop!

Speaking of money, with the price of fuel now wouldn't be a bad time to take a trip. Cut down on fuel costs by around $200-250.

Why do captains have a problem with sun screen? WTH?

mriguy 03-03-2015 08:58 PM

Don't go to Bourbon Street the night before and lose your wallet in a titty bar. I heard this was bad to do.

haoward 03-03-2015 09:08 PM

Take some bonine motion sickness pills the night before and and hr before leaving for the trips!

B-Stealth 03-03-2015 09:39 PM

Sea-Sick

I have only been sea sick twice and it was very much the result of the previous nights activities. You don't wanna be that guy.

Bring plenty of food, it helps me to eat all through the day.

If you have a prescription for Glaucoma bring it, I heard it works wonders.

noodle creek 03-03-2015 09:46 PM

Take a bonine the night before and another one the morning of the trip 45 min or an hour before leaving. Stay away from dramamine, it was make you drowsy. Drink plenty of water and you'll be good to go.

Duck Butter 03-04-2015 07:34 AM

do what you normally do and don't think about it. Dramamine makes you tired. Don't get sloppy the night before. Ginger Ale is good. If captain's boat is a Triton then you don't have to worry

Spunt Drag 03-04-2015 07:59 AM

If you see the elusive Tripletail, take plenty of pics. It could be the last time you'll see one in your life before they go extinct.

C-Bass2mouth 03-04-2015 08:13 AM

Thanks guys! Looking for some bonine now. My buddy says he has some sort of prescription patches he uses that he'll let me have. I'll be taking a few go pros with me so I shouldn't have to use my phone too much. Think the captain would mind if I put a sticky mount on his rig somewhere? They've never left marks on my ranger before. It's with Paradise Outfitters also. Heard nothing but good things about them.

I've heard the same. I doubt they're cool with my glaucoma meds though lol

The stuff in aerosol spray bottles stains white vinyl.

Mako19 03-06-2015 12:57 PM

Bring every ice chest that you can get your hands on, then continue looking for more!

If you get into the fish good those chests will fill up fast and you don't want to have to be looking to buy one in Venice.

I would think a box of heavy duty trash bags could be use to "keep" fish in if more space is needed on the ride home.

Limit your alcohol.
Water proof clothing and extra clothing including shoes.
Eat good meal the night before.
Adequate rest the night before.
Sun glasses.
Lots of ice chest/coolers.

Good suggestions. Make sure you bring a jacket. No matter what the temperature is forecast the run down the river is always cold this time of year. Go by west marine and pick up a pair of grundens gage series bibs. They are $60 and completely water and wind proof.

Gotta keep tuna meat COLD COLD and dry. Don't want the water to saturate into the meat and wash off all of the oils in the meat. That is what gives it it's goodness!

Good to know! I'm guessing they pack it for you after cleaning? And I have some good bibs for bass fishing I'll be bringing meaux. How much meat can I expect to have? Like buy a small deep freezer for da house before I go type of haul? I know it depends on how we do, but just in case we do well.

You need to bring a few boxes of your own gallon freezer bags. They usually have them for sale at the marina but you don't want to risk them being sold out and they will be 5 times their regular price.

Also, if ya'll are staying in Venice the night of the trip, which I recommend because that is too long of a day on the water to get in a vehicle and drive home, bring some supplies to eat some of the catch.

We usually bring supplies to make sushi and to pan fry some of the fish.

Seasonings, olive oil, wasabi, soy sauce...

I'm not sure if it's because you work up such an appetite from fishing all day or because the meat is so fresh. But, the best fish I have ever eaten is when we eat them the night they are caught.

Great idea. We will be staying after the night after the trip.
