Gumbo Throw Down
Since interest is building I thought I would throw this out.
Preliminary ideas. Looking for input from anyone considering this. Please.. 1. Solo effort or helper/teams allowed? If so should helper/team members be required to pay a full or partial entry fee? 2. Fowl based gumbo(chicken, duck, turkey, etc). No seafood. 3. Meat, veggies, and stock can be prepped before hand. Again no seafood. 4. All other cooking must be done on site. 5. Roux cannot come from a jar. Must be cooked on site by you. 6. $20 entry fee. 7. Minimum amount of gumbo per contestant or just do what you are comfortable with? Consider this one carefully as it may be our downfall. See below thought. 8. Judges pick top 3 gumbos and peoples choice(via ticket sales) determine 1st, 2cnd, 3rd places. Cook a small gumbo and you may be the best but screw yourself by running out and lacking sales. 9. February and Laffeyette seem realistic to everyone? Working on a supplier for everyones cups. Looking for input from you guys. |
What about the trophy? Lol....
In my K of C council we had one or two gumbo cook-offs before I came up with the idea to make a trophy that is passed one year to the next to for that year's winner. It is a gold cast iron pot that sits on a base with brass plaques and each year the newest winner's name is engraved onto one of the brass name plaques. We could do something similar with a gold spoon maybe or even a cast iron pot. It makes for an interesting bragging conversation piece. |
The Destin fishing Museum does this once a year........not sure how to get the details but they do a good job.......
they actually allow you to cook whatever, where ever.......show up and it's all public vote........run out and not enough peeps have a shot at tasting your grub....... three hours to vote...... Could be a nice little SC sponsored fund raiser |
Used to do event similar to this for the Red Cross. Tickets were $1 and a ticket would get you a cup of gumbo. Several times I saw people leave and go home and get a big bowl and come back. It was a lot of fun.
As far as a trophy I haven't got that far yet. My dad said he would give a 1/2 gln of Woodford Reseve for the winner. Will go from there. |
All I can base it on is the Gumbo Cookoff in New Iberia. They had a gumbo cop come by and check your set up and food to insure no jar roux.
I am for the winter months....it always makes gumbo a bit better. We also need to come up with a "name" to put on the trophy. I have some ideas I am working on and I also need to talk to another business owner here in Broussard. If it works out, you guys will not be disappointed. I would vote for group/team. The more involved, the better. RC |

Did someone say fresh sausage? How fresh ya talkin?

If you want a real gumbo contest. do it like the jambalaya contest. Everyone starts w/ the same meat, veggie, rice. Only thing you can use different is seasonings and talent. decide before hand on roux. either jar or made or just made.
|
Dang duck...you get that hog this morning? Jealous...I'm stuck inside this chemical plant till 3
|
Eman...stop...this texan needs any advantage i can get
|
As for the trophy , why not an aluminum stirring paddle engraved w/ the winners name and the date. pass it on each year???

Keep it fowl based. What type of bird is used is personal choice. |

Pilgrims gonna be in full force! Hide ya wife...hide ya kids
|
How about doing this during the split.......say in Lafayette somewhere......neutral east/west spot......
Gumbo is like jambalaya....ones man's envie is another man's gag reflex |
Guys, I got the spot for it. Yall can bring tents and stay on site instead of having to drive back home. Mr Crab knows the place. Plenty of room.

NO BS OPINIONS...
I threw this idea out to see if a few guys wanted to cook, drink a few, and hang out. It is getting more attention than I ever though it would. Talks of trophies already. What is your realistic expectations for a first year event and are you willing to show up and help it grow if your expectations aren't met? I don't see the 1st annual (hopefully) gumbo cook off being a huge success. It is however something we can build on. J |
I would definitely try to attend if I could.

Thus can be big. Like I said, o have the property to house such an event. This can get as big as yall want it to be

They suck Joey.....I'm off the LSU wagon. Roll Tide!!

Miles thinking. If it didn't work the first three times it's bound to work the fourth time. First and goal at the one and run the same unsuccessful play four times.
|
|
Thats a "lets make us feel better" article. We got beat up and it sucks. Should have took the three points and changed QB's at halftime. Too little too late unfortunately.

Just a lil FYI for the organizer(s). If you know someone with a business that sells certain products the guys would enjoy(outdoor cooking, seasoning/rubs)if you appeal to them and explain what you are doing and that proceeds will be donated to a worthy cause, most will more often than not contribute a donation as a prize.

Only if your a tax exempt charity organization. But, they can get free publicity and advertising. Just ask all they can say is no, not now. If they do donate something ask them if they have a banner that can be posted.
I organized an internet forum member get together for owners of a certain grill/smoker. http://www.broilkingbbq.com/grills/keg/keg-series.html I got some no replies, some no answers but I also got a bunch of cool stuff from a good number of people that were happy to donate something. Especially if it's a business that is trying to get their name out there. Look, I've been busy as heck but I'll send a couple of requests out and I'll let you know what I find out. If the real organizer would send me his name and contact info in a pm I'll do what I can to help. BTW, if you really feel strongly about donating to a charity you CAN apply for the Charity status. I'll ask a buddy of mine who is an accountant. He knows what needs to be done. Talk to the right people and you might be able to get sponsors! Nathan |
If y'all want to do it for little angels I can get them to give the 501c3 info. They will also promote it if we want. Do we want to keep it just salty cajun or open it up?
|
I'd say for the first time let's keep it somewhat smaller and off the grid so to say. I'm all for going big or go home but some people may back away from cooking for a crowd. Open it to families and friends and maybe the group you want to help.

Im down for whatever. Keep it small and spend a day hanging out and cooking. If everyone is game we do a $20 buy in and can give some $ to little angels. If we can set up and try to sell some for more $ that's good too. First time will be a learning experience. I damn sure think it will be fun.
