Rusty hooks
 

Fellas most of my top water lure hooks are rusty! what kind of hooks can I use to replace these rusty ones?

I sent mine to salty for paint and hooks..

put rice in your tackle box

Some chalk works just *** good.

what does the rice and chalk do to help with the rust?
its stays dry in the tackle bag and compartment that I keep them in.

These lures are at least 4 years old also

Size depends on the bait.... think I use 4 the most but would have to wait till I got back to camp and confirm

If you aren't sure take one off and go to your local tackle store and match it. If you are changing a lot of them i recommend a pair of split ring pliers.

I recommend corrosionX. Spray in box and decreases rust dramatically.

I recommend going with larger hooks than what came on the bait... the larger hooks wont effect the performance of the bait plus u will get all of those fish that just roll on your bait... hook ups increase 20% easy with bigger hooks.

Yep. I started using #2 KVD hooks on spook JRs and man I catch a lot of them in the stomach and throat when they roll over it.

Yessir! I use the #2 or the #1

Some baits it will affect, not all but some like Corkys and Suspending baits

Yeah I only change my hooks out on the topwaters... if I need to change em on subsurface baits I go back with same size hooks... but for Spook Jrs and Skitterwalks I change my hooks as soon as I buy the baits. Make a huge diff on hookups... especially when they aren't really "eating" it

I change them on mirodines too just don't go as big. Gotta change em on softdines too those hooks are crap.

I don't need any scientific proof! I know it works... other members of this forum know it works... if you don't want to do it that's fine... continue with only hooking up with 50% of your topwater blowups... I prefer 70% over 50%...

Fish lips keep rust off! LOL

Maybe a dip in muratic acid. Just a thought.

I'm going to bring up this old thread. Which type vmc treble hooks and what size are you putting on your top waters?

I don't use the VMC. But I'll answer. lol I use the Mustad KVD elite treble. 2x short 1x strong size 2 on my tops.
