Grand isle the deep water is closer.
We go in a deep V 19' mako and have been 40 miles out of grand isle amd have never found blue enough water for mahi mahi. If you have a shallow nautic star I don't think I would bring it offshore for palegic fishing. Maybe red snapper but then again you can cach red snapper 10-15 miles out of grand isle. I would think you need to be a minimum of 20 miles out of cameron for the same water depth. |
Water deeper out of forchon.
Fourchon is prolly 7-8 miles further south than GI Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I wouldn't try in that small a boat but if you are going to do it I believe going out of fourchon would be a lot better and closer. You would have to prolly go 50 plus miles out of Cameron and Gi

There is a good wreck about 25 miles out of fourchon that holds ling grouper and snapper but no Mahi. I would wait till you boat grew about 10'.

This year we will definitely launch at Fourchon and give it a try. |
that sounds very dangerous in that small boat. going out of cameron for mahi is a long run.
|
I got a 21' and I want to hit that wreck out of forchon to fly fish some cobia but I'm still hesitant all though I've seen plenty of 24' bay boats out there.

I don't really think it's a wreck I think it's one of the rigs to reefs deals.

Let's hook up and run out there together.
Having a buddy boat is the way to go and always makes me feel more confident. |

Yeah maybe we can do that ON A CALM DAY ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I gotta get the humming bird installed with the 360 imaging. The I pilot is gonna be great over that thing. If you can anchor in 70' anchoring off the edge up current from it would be ideal and chum back too it. It's hard to get the groupers out if you right on top of it.

sounds like a bigger boat is the way to go. i been maybe 5 miles out but no more than 10 miles on a calm day. i was a little past the trash line but it was a very calm day.
|
18 footer can catch you trout out of cameron is about all. Got to run a long ways south to get to deep enough water. Closest I have caught dolphin was about 20 miles and they were tiny.

Those guys are set up and know how to put you on the fish. In my opinion, it is more cost effective to just get a charter than to own a boat that size and all of the equipment it takes. |

You n me gonna have to hook up in GI a few times this year. I'll be down there the first week and weekend of the season for sure |
State Season starts next month, right?
|
We should get a group off bay boat and run for snapper ect. Been wanting to take my 22 ft pathfinder for snapper but I am too much of a chicken to make a run by myself lol.

If the seas are right we are usually out there every saturday and going to try to line up a week of vacation and stay out there a whole week this year. My buddy has a brand new 26' Contender and this will be his first year offshore fishing. We had a few good trip last year: |
Camron
Fish the grass lines at 50 miles plus. See bay boats out there all the time! Big kuhona's!
|
We've caught small chicken dolphin(nothing over 24") in that area on grass lines and floating debris 30-40ish miles out.

If you go offshore in a 18-22ft single motor boat by your self, far enough to catch snapper
#1 Hope you have good friends #2 Have 911 and Coast Guard on speed dial I have been working out in the Gulf going on 15 years and have seen it go from glass to 10 ft waves with 60pmh winds in thunder storms Your playing a game against mother nature and just remember you might do it 100xs but that one time will be the worst experience you ever have in your life in a boat We got caught in a squall 5 years ago 34 miles out of Cameron in a 30ft Fountain with 3 engines and had my life jacket on tight and with knuckles praying to God that we survive That would of put a single engine boat on bottom Thats all I have to say about that!! |

Yeppppppp! Everyone on here has made fun of the weather man for being wrong all the time, yet people will trust him when their life most depends on it. Not many second chances out there |
Pensacola is not that far a drive. Folks over that way get into a lot of neat fish within sight of the beach. No need to risk lives bringing a small boat 50 miles out.
Depending on your species preferences, there is a lot of neat stuff off of the big bend area of Florida too. The silt and nutrients from the Mississippi are a great blessing to Louisiana, but they also define some of the limitations. And if you must chase the pelagics off the LA coast, a ride in the charter boats is very cost effective when compared to a ride in a hearse. |

Its a calculated risk. |

This is from about 3 years ago, this boat was out fishing and got in some rough weather and starting taking on water. He was next to our platform and was spotted by a work boat we had in the area.
Now this crew has God on there side because water came on so fast they lost all radio signal and could not get any cell service with the one phone that was not wet while trying to bilge the boat out. This boat sunk to the bottom with end 25mins and the 6 people were saved by our work boat . The odds of them having some one to see them and find them in the Gulf of Mexico like this is a once in a lifetime deal. Because your a needle in a haystack out here |
Gotta respect it I used to go fifty all the time in my twenty four just lost one of my .best friends Chsing a fish too deep diving he knew better he made a poor decision and now lots are suffering dont put a fish in front family without a buddy boat r twins u got no business out there I learned my lesson ill never have speargun in my hands again
|
Sorry to hear about your friend Jared.
Freediving or SCUBA? |
Scuba but could happen easily free diving I was goin thru a rig and split my head on a cross beam and saw stars coulda easily knocked me out and I'd be in same spot. Some people love doin it as I did but to me it aint worth the risk
|
Sorry about your boy. Man I always wanted to spearfish. When I was a kid, my dad and them would do it all the time while I stayed on the boat and fished. Once I got old enough to go he quit going. I think mainly cause he knew he was going to have to let me jump in and he didn't want me to. After hearing this story though is why I haven't tried it. Too many things out of your control.
Farthest I go offshore is a few miles chasing trips. That's the extent of my offshore fishing. |
Jared, was Mike free diving or on air?
And very sorry for your loss again. He went to school with Matt also. |
On air around 200 which was too deep pushed it and something went wrong no1 will ever know either got the bends and blacked out r ran out and tried to come up too quick floated up to surface they tried CPR but no luck
|
That's terrible news...sorry for the loss of your buddy
