Prized Boobies sighted in Big Lake

Three extremely rare Brown Booby Birds were sighted in the southern part of Turner's Bay sitting on a well head this past Friday. To my knowledge this would be the fifth, sixth and seventh birds ever sighted in Louisiana according to the data on ebird. You can see a picture of this bird by Googling Brown Booby.

I bet there will be some birdwatchers looking to charter boats out to see these if they hang around, seriously:) These are pelagic birds and seeing one inshore in Louisiana is something uncommon for sure

Great shots tfinnie

Soo your saying they are legal to shoot and eat?

jkcckc2002 10-29-2013 09:25 AM

A few years back my family went to Florida, I wanted to see some brown boobies at the beach all I saw was tan boobies. I enjoyed it either way

Negative:rotfl:

Not a duck or gamebird, protected under Migratory Bird Treaty Act just like a cardinal or blue jay or pelican etc. You would get fined and probably get the wrath of the birdwatching community:grinpimp:

Blue Jays are protected? Ooops... Why on earth would anyone want to protect them noisey things? I hate em. I have more respect for a crow. At least he will shut up and fly off when he sees you.

Pretty much most birds are protected if they are not a gamebird or 'nuisance' bird (blackbird, grackles, crows). Some introduced species like starlings, pigeons, house sparrows, and a few others aren't protected. Lots of protected birds have fallen victim to a bb or pellet gun on a bird feeder though:rotfl:

Forget what organization (Audubon?) but one of their goals is to keep common birds common. Passenger pigeons once numbered in the billions (with a b:eek:) and went extinct pretty quick but that was loss of habitat. Believe it or not in the 1950s the brown pelican was extirpated from Louisiana and almost went extinct. Hard to believe as common as they are now. Alligators have a similar success story

I think most of us honed our marksman skills at a young age with birds and a bb gun. Mom and grandma weren't always happy about it though.lol

"W" 10-29-2013 12:18 PM

I have ate lots of birds in my day that was taken by a pellet gun... we would cook em on a camp fire in our barn yard!!!

Name im sure we ate it!!

Killdee is not bad

mcjaredsandwich 10-29-2013 12:31 PM

Passenger pigeon went extinct due to over hunting. At least that's what they taught in my wildlife class, not due to habitat loss. Punt guns did some damage. Carolina parakeet went extinct due to harvest and habitat loss.

Reggoh 10-29-2013 12:35 PM

How many robins did we shoot as kids?... hahaha

I've never killed one and never eaten one...

But they are pretty darn tasty from what I hear

from loss of bottomland hardwoods and overhunting I believe, pretty amazing they went from a billion to zero in that little time

and yes many many robins still get killed south of I-10 in Louisiana:spineyes:
