Canada geese

Anyone kill Canadians on a regular basis in Louisiana? I've seen three killed and all came from around gueydan area. Just curious.

bgizzle 09-10-2013 10:39 PM

In hunting season of course.

Show up in 2nd split. Kill a good amount.

AubreyLaHaye458 09-11-2013 06:09 AM

We've killed two in my life

Top Dawg 09-11-2013 06:57 AM

Kill a lot in between thornwell and lake Arthur. Last year not as many as usual.

Lake Chuck Duck 09-11-2013 07:12 AM

We usually get 1 or 2 a year in Sweetlake.

MarshRat89 09-11-2013 07:46 AM

Had a couple missed oppurtunitys over the years with some passing low overhead. Never specifically targeted them though. We had some drop in on us during a conservation hunt 2 years ago also. I thought long and hard about pulling the trigger.

Fishmaster19 09-11-2013 07:46 AM

I was very surprised to see the limit this year! I have a lease in welsh this year and I'm hoping we kill a couple...Be kinda neat to see. I'd prolly even mount one.

Top Dawg 09-11-2013 07:48 AM

They're not that great for eatin. We used to pass on them because it would take away one of your specks. Last year you could shoot 2specks and a bonus Canada and of course we didn't see as many.

Here's a little cackler we killed. Size comparison.

Man I thought those things were suposed to be huge! At least all the ones I've seen in parks and such are...

There are 2 different species of Canadian Geese... Lesser Canada is what is in Top Dawgs picture... We shot a few of the bigger ones when I was living in Wyoming a couple of years ago... You can see they are pretty good sized

I have no idea how much you see the Lesser vs. the Greater here in Louisiana because I don't do much waterfowl hunting here.

Top Dawg 09-11-2013 08:38 AM

There's actually a variety of species. The lesser and greater can be broken down. Most of what we see here in LA are lessers. The cackler is a smaller lesser. The lessers here are about the size of a speck. Up north is where most of the greaters stay. Then you have the giants. Those are the ones that get up around 16 pounds. I've never seen them down here. All I've ever seen is the lessers.

meaux fishing 09-11-2013 08:46 AM

The only giant I've ever seen in Louisiana was hunting along the Mississippi river in NE La by Tallulah. We couldnt get a shot on it though

marshrunner757 09-11-2013 09:37 AM

Yes there are several variations. Made a hunt in Jersey back in 2011 with my boys. Killed a crap load of greater and one cackler. Cackler was really cool looking. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/11/apeby4a5.jpg

LOL. Yea, that was our best morning. We bought back 60 something dressed. Whoever said these weren't good to eat has no clue. They are amazing! Better than any goose I've killed here.

Maybe a difference in diet? Don't really know. Never ate one killed down here. These came off corn fields.

Those people in Wyoming said that Antelope meat wasn't any good either... Put that stuff in a slow cooker with some Cajun seasoning and touch... they tore it up.

The meat on these were a pretty deep red. Very good texture and tasted great. Hell, we grilled, pot roasted, made fajitas. You name it, we made it lol.

Of course you did! No one knows better! Don't talk just listen!

jlincecum 09-11-2013 08:59 PM

we see waaaayyyy more than we would like during the second split. all lessers. only greaters I've seen in Louisiana were on Toledo in someones yard. they die extremely easy and you would be better off trying to cook your boots

huntin fool 09-11-2013 09:02 PM
