Need some help with duck calls for a beginner

So I've been out of duck hunting for close to 10 years so I'm in need of some new duck calls and maybe some videos to practice with........ I even sucked at calling then! What's a decent duck call for a beginner? I'm not looking to spend $100 for the calls. Also, are there any YouTube videos y'all would recommend to help with the calling?

DA COVE 08-13-2013 09:04 PM

I'd say the sure shot yentzen double reed. And around $35. It'll get u started. Get with someone that calls. Learn the different calls, then learn when to use them. Don't try to mimic persons that are in duck calling contests, they aren't calling ducks, they are calling judges..

Can't beat the DR-85 Haydel's

Rippinlips55 08-13-2013 09:17 PM

Dr-85 is great!

BigAl 08-13-2013 09:19 PM

X2 on Haydel. The variable tone (black one) is a little easier to blow. I would recommend listening to ducks and try to mimic what they do. That's how I learned, along with hunting with very good callers.

DR-85

X2.... Although I've seen a few buddies adapt easier to a dirty rice mallard call. Can't go wrong with a dr 85. And it doubles back as a teal call.

Thousands have fallen to this call,it's not hard to learn IMO and Mr.Mervis used to give lessons before you leave, heard about his son on here so don't know how much is going on right now,he also has a website with dvd's and all, good luck.

Never blown one of his duck calls. Is that the old bamboo call? Terrible thing that happened to Kendall.

DA COVE 08-13-2013 09:35 PM

Find Haydel's to raspy. IMO. But something double reed should be a good starting point. ( whatever brand u decide on)

Mark a line with a sharpie on the Reids where they meet the shim. Then pull the Reids out slide them back toward the end the sounds come out of just enough to bury the line you drew. Try that. If nothing then just put it back on your mark. It's worth a shot bc a fine tuned dr85 is a force to be reckoned with. I learned on a faulks. That's a raspy critter. Didn't know any better and that's what gpaw blew and swore by.

bgizzle 08-13-2013 09:47 PM

My buddy has one of those calls. I gotta cool one

SULPHITE 08-13-2013 10:01 PM

zink ph2 are easy and I second the dr 85

+1, the experience of picking it up at their house along with a hand made call that holds true to our local heritage is irreplaceable too.

MarshRat89 08-13-2013 10:09 PM

ditto on the dr-85. Been drop birds with em for years. If You break it, lose it or wear it out just replace it for the same price as a box of steal.

Dink 08-13-2013 11:05 PM

Sulphite......did you get that outta my bag?

redaddiction 08-13-2013 11:06 PM

The Primos Wench double reed is real easy to blow. But can't go wrong with the DR85.

bgizzle 08-13-2013 11:45 PM

Them wenches you can make two different hen sounds. That I really like. I blew it a good bit last yr until I decided to finally bite the bullet and get an rnt macrohen. I like it a lot. Doesn't stick much in cold but it's DEFINATELY a different style of calling I'm still trying to perfect it

jrdntboy09 08-13-2013 11:57 PM

Echo trash talker is cheap and easiest call I've ever blown. I bought my brother in-law one for a beginner call and every time I blew it I liked it more. I know have one on my lanyard next to a hobo prime meat. YouTube kent Cullem best live duck caller in the world. He originally made echo calls then branched off on his own with hobos

Yep. Uncover that hole and it's pretty high pitched. Good as a teal call.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I'll probably go with the DR85 for now. Is the only place to get a Chien Caille in Gueydan? I would love to pick one up just for the heritage behind them.

specktator 08-14-2013 06:45 AM

No they sell them around Lafayette. I know Shooters has em. You can get them online on mackspw.com also.

pelchay11 08-14-2013 08:38 AM

Original wench...I been using the same one for 12 years....never had a problem with it hanging up...and for the price u can't beat it...easy to use and some come with the how to use video

Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

If you order it custom and pick it up they will put your name on it, they make awesome gifts.

Agreed, hobo is the way to go! that's what I blow prime meat can't beat a hobo IMO have met a talked with kent several times he is very passionate about his work worth every penny!

aquaholic 08-15-2013 12:33 AM

DR-85 is great starting call!! Hobo is what I blow most times. Kent is phenomenal on a call!! Practice practice practice !!

SULPHITE 08-15-2013 10:34 AM

which hobo do you guys have. yes they are nice i think I've only tried the double reed one if i can recall..

Trout rivers 08-15-2013 08:10 PM

I have a prime meat it's a single reed

The ICU2 is a great double reed call which is amazingly versatile for a double reed!

simplepeddler 08-15-2013 08:57 PM

I like the wench too.......alot.........
do yourself a favor and get to the blind way before sun up......lay back and listen to the birds.....you will be surprised at just how little sounds they actually make on the water.....all that hail call stuff is ........well........crap IMO.........
I have 100$ calls that I never use........I like the easy soft blowing calls........
A little is a LOT down here

Old Advice

My grandfather taught me how to call, but before he did he taught me when to call. He always said the first step is the most important. He would feed ducks after the season and make us sit in the blinds to learn the "duck talk".
